👂 What happens at a hearing test?

Lots of people tell us they’ve noticed their hearing isn’t quite what it used to be — the TV creeping louder, missing bits of conversation, or struggling in busy places.

But there’s one thing that often stops people booking an appointment…

“I don’t know what a hearing test involves.”

So let’s clear that up 😊

🗣 First, we have a chat

We start with a relaxed conversation about your hearing and general ear health. We’ll talk about situations where you find listening difficult and how your hearing is affecting everyday life.

👂 Then we look in your ears

Using a small light called an otoscope, we check your ears to see if anything obvious — like earwax — could be affecting your hearing.

🎧 The hearing test itself

You’ll wear headphones and sit in a quiet booth. You’ll hear a series of tones at different pitches and volumes, and you simply press a button when you hear them.

That’s it.
No discomfort. No surprises. Just listening.

We may also ask you to repeat a few words, which helps us see how clearly you hear speech.

📊 Understanding your results

We explain everything clearly and in plain English. If hearing loss is found, we’ll talk through your options — with no pressure and no obligation.

A hearing test is simply a check of your hearing health, just like an eye test is for your vision. The earlier changes are identified, the easier it is to keep you connected to the conversations and people you love ❤️

📞 If you’ve been wondering about your hearing, this might be the sign to get it checked. Call today to book your appointment.

At Hearing Centre, we know life gets busy — and hearing health often gets pushed to the bottom of the list. That’s why we’ve made it easier than ever to take the first step.

You can now complete a quick and simple online hearing test from the comfort of your own home.

No appointments. No waiting rooms. Just a few quiet minutes and a pair of headphones.

Here’s how it works:
🔹 Find a quiet space

Ever wondered why tinnitus sounds like it’s coming from your ears… even when there’s no sound? 👂🔊

Tinnitus isn’t just an “ear problem” — it’s actually a brain + hearing system teamwork issue. Here’s what’s really going on:

🎧 1️⃣ It often starts in the ear

Inside your inner ear (the cochlea) are tiny hair cells that translate sound vibrations into electrical signals for your brain.
When these cells get damaged — from noise, aging, or other factors — they don’t send signals properly.

🧠 2️⃣ The brain turns up the volume

Your brain hates missing information. When sound signals decrease, it tries to compensate by increasing sensitivity in the hearing pathways.
Think of it like turning up a radio when the signal is weak.

⚡ 3️⃣ Random nerve activity gets mistaken for sound

With the system on “high gain,” normal background nerve activity can be misinterpreted as ringing, buzzing, hissing, or whooshing — even in total silence.

🔁 4️⃣ The sound loop gets reinforced

The more we notice tinnitus, the more the brain flags it as important. Stress and attention can make the perception stronger, creating a feedback loop.

💡 The key takeaway?
Tinnitus is real, but it’s usually a sign of changes in how the hearing system and brain are communicating — not that something dangerous is happening in your ears.

Understanding the mechanism is the first step toward managing it.

Many people put off having hearing aids and it is often the case of an awkward situation which results in people coming to see us. James Brown, founder of Loaded magazine talks about his journey of hearing and hearing aids.

I finally knew I must get hearing aids ten years ago when, during a group conversation, I failed to hear an acquaintance tell us that his adult son had just died. It was only when another friend reflected on it later that I realised how bad my hearing deterioration had become. To have been oblivious...
