2 nutrients we need more of in the winter months... ESPECIALLY if you experience SAD 🙏💞

When it comes to protecting your brain, two simple nutrients stand out: vitamin D and magnesium. Research shows that taking them together can help reduce symptoms of depression and slow down the process of brain aging.

Vitamin D is often called the “sunshine vitamin” because our bodies make it when exposed to sunlight. It plays a key role in regulating mood and supporting brain cell growth. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to higher risks of depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline.

Magnesium, on the other hand, acts like a calming mineral for the nervous system. It helps regulate neurotransmitters, improves sleep quality, and reduces stress. Without enough magnesium, the brain struggles to manage signals effectively, leading to fatigue, low mood, and poor focus.

Together, vitamin D and magnesium create a powerful synergy. Magnesium helps activate vitamin D in the body, making it more effective. This partnership improves brain function, lifts mood, and offers protection against age-related disorders like memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease.

The good news is that these nutrients are easy to get. Vitamin D comes from sunlight, fatty fish, and fortified foods. Magnesium is abundant in leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Supplements are also widely available when diet alone isn’t enough.

Supporting your brain doesn’t always require complex treatments. Sometimes it starts with simple daily habits that fuel both body and mind. Vitamin D and magnesium might just be the natural boost your brain has been waiting for.

The body is amazing... And science is always learning how it works...

Most people believe the brain is the ultimate control centre, but science reveals a surprising truth. The heart contains over 40,000 neurons, essentially a “little brain” inside your chest, and it sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends back. This powerful two-way communication system means your heart has a major influence on emotions, decision-making, and even mental clarity.
Researchers have found that heart rhythms affect brain regions linked to stress, memory, and problem-solving. When the heart is in a state of calm, the brain functions more effectively, leading to clearer thinking and emotional balance. On the other hand, irregular heart signals can disrupt brain performance and amplify anxiety.
This discovery is transforming how scientists understand the connection between the body and mind. It proves that the heart is not just a pump but an intelligent organ that helps shape how we feel, think, and live. Keeping your heart healthy may be one of the best ways to keep your mind sharp.

I have my daily dandelion root tea to support my liver... Added bonus here for the gut 🙏

Laboratory research shows dandelion root extract killed more than 90% of colon cancer cells within 48 hours, while leaving healthy cells unharmed. The extract triggered multiple cell-death pathways, even in cancers lacking the tumor-suppressor gene p53. In mice, it also slowed tumor growth without toxicity. Scientists stress that findings are preliminary and human clinical trials are still needed.

I drove back to Glasgow from Brighton after the conference and stopped overnight on the way home.

My partner came down to meet me and we stayed in Blackpool (some thought it was a weird choice, some judged, some loved it).

But, I was making new memories in Blackpool... It was an intentional choice (and a very reasonably priced travelodge too!).

In my past when I came to Blackpool it was in my old life as a fit pro, I was there as a fitness presenter on the master trainer team for ICG... I thought that was my path, my future...

But it wasn't. I had to give all that up when the Crohn's came along. A part of my life I have let go of.

The grief was real...and unexpected...and difficult, I didn't want to give power to the condition.

Part of the healing journey is finding the things you CAN do, and embracing them with all your heart.

Being diagnosed with a life long condition, doesn't need to be a life sentence.

This was part of the message the Voices of Lived Experience were sharing with the medical professionals is the diagnosis isn't the end, it's the beginning of something new. Yes there will be challenges, but if you are ready to take radical responsibility, adopt the lifestyle medicine approach, there will be light in your life...

Choose your words carefully, they have power - whether it's the medical profession delivering diagnosis, or the human living with a condition - words matter, language matters...

The healing rebel journey is about finding your path to healing through movement and relaxation but also knowing and understanding your values so you make the right decisions for you.

If you are looking for light in your healing journey, drop me a message and let's have a chat.

What are you reading this week?

I listened to The Last Witch of Scotland on my trip down to Brighton. It's the first fiction audiobook I have listened to... It was excellent! The readers were fantastic. The story was beautifully written.

If you’re at the end of another busy week, this is your invitation to take some time for yourself.

Light a candle, make a cup of tea, and settle down with a journal or notebook.

Write down what comes up in response to this: What reactions or fears do I have that I can't trace back to my own experiences?

You know the ones I mean, those moments when you think "Why do I feel this way? Where does this even come from?"

Maybe it's an unexplained wariness, a pattern you can't shake, or a reaction that feels bigger than the situation calls for.

These can often come from our ancestral line.

They aren’t random, they’re inherited wisdom and wounds that have travelled through generations to reach you.

As you write, notice what emerges without judgment. Let your pen move freely across the page and see what comes up.

🌙 Ready to go deeper? Shadow work offers a way to explore these ancestral patterns and inherited stories.

If what comes up in your journalling feels like it wants more attention, my shadow work tarot readings can help illuminate what’s hidden and guide you towards understanding yourself better.
