BSVH Hydrotherapy

BSVH Hydrotherapy Hydrotherapy Unit within Bishop's Stortford Veterinary Hospital. For your animals rehabilitation nee What is hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is derived from the Greek word meaning water healing. It is controlled aquatic exercise in heated sanitized water. A combination of warmth, buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure reduces pain and swelling, promotes muscle relaxation and improves circulation and healing. The warmth of the water will relax the muscles. A decrease in range of motion can often be due to pain, swelling and/or stiffness which can be reduced by the warm water. Hydrostatic pressure (the pressure of the water on the animal) can also reduce swelling and therefore possibly increase the range or motion. The buoyancy of the water decreases the weight bearing on the limbs. The buoyancy of the water will help move the stiff joint with further range of movement with minimal exercise. This helps to reduce pain and can allow easier movement with minimal exercise. Benefits of hydrotherapy:
– Relief from pain.
– Reduce swelling and stiffness
– Cardiovascular fitness (heart and lungs).
– Joint movement. .
– Muscle strengthening and building.
– Improve circulation.
– Reduced impact exercise.
– Mental stimulation. Why hydrotherapy:
- Hip and elbow dysplasia.
- Osteoarthritis.
- Pre and post orthopaedic surgical rehabilitation.
- Weight management.
- Medical conditions.
- General fitness and conditioning.

As veterinary professionals we have to complete a certain number of CPD (continued professional development) hours per year. Yesterday I, along with some of our vets, nurses, and nursing assistants, attended a canine massage workshop with Born to Run Canine Massage, Fitness & Rehab Specialists 🐾

We all had a fabulous time learning new skills, and this video proves that our doggies also thoroughly enjoyed themselves too! 😴💙

Thanks again Angela! BSVH x

SUPER SUNDAY 🌟

This weeks super Sunday star patient is Daisy! 💛

She has overcome her total fear of the water (with the help of some sausages and liver paste 😜) and is now settled and thriving in her sessions! 💪 we are all so proud of you!

We aim to build up some muscle mass in her hind limbs specifically to help her continue to be able to zoomie around without wobbling over sometimes 🤗

Keep up the good work Daisy!

SUPER SUNDAY 🌟

My first super Sunday star patient post is 2 year old Snufkin… 🌟 (he is also my fur brother so had to be really! 😺)

After an unknown trauma to his foot in February, which resulted in a total left hind limb amputation and findings on X-ray that showed fractures to his pelvis and spine, 9 weeks on and a weeks stay in hospital, he has completed his first hydrotherapy session 👏

We aim to build up some core strength, as well as muscle mass in his remaining hind limb 💪 hydrotherapy is also a great form of controlled exercise that improves cardio vascular fitness level. This will aid Snufkin’s recovery as he starts to become more active again, learning to navigate life on three legs 😻

Over the following course of sessions we will increase intensity and water level, in turn, aiming to improve circulation and overall flexibility and stamina! You’ve got this Snufkin 💪👏🐈💦
