We know there’s a lot of counselling training out there.

At Training for Counsellors, we do things differently.

Our training is grounded in real practice — not theory that sounds good on paper but becomes harder to hold in complexity.
It’s facilitated by experienced practitioners who understand the nuance, the responsibility, and the ethical weight of the work.
And it’s designed to be reflective and experiential, because counselling isn’t something you simply learn… it’s something you grow into.

We focus on what actually sustains you in this profession:
Not just getting qualified — but staying resourced, working ethically, and building a counselling career that lasts.

Because this work is complex.
And your training should respect that.

If you’re looking for training that meets the reality of practice — take a look at what we offer.

✨✨Working Expressively with Children and Young People✨✨

Chanelle is returning with her CPD on Working Expressively with Children and Young People. This 3 hour interactive CPD will focus on working at aesthetic distance with children and young people.

Aesthetic distance creates an alternative frame of reference so that CYP can process difficult emotions without being overcome by them. Chanelle will be sharing techniques that you can add to your toolbox so that you can meet your CYP clients in their energy level, thereby quickly gaining trust and insight:

✨Creative Contracting

✨Puppet dyads

✨Pebble anchoring

There is a whole world of information available to us in the therapy room that most counsellors have never been trained to work with.

In our two-day training with Barnardo's on
Working with Sensory Awareness
this week, the response was exactly what you’d expect when practitioners realise what’s been sitting in front of them all along.

As our Zara explains, the central nervous system drives the sensory system and the sensory system underpins other processes including communication and behaviour.

So when a client says “I don’t know" - that's data.
- It's also data when they repeatedly tell you that they “don’t do feelings."
- And when they present with silence, or refusal, or ...
- The list goes on.

These understandings help us to build connection. We argue it's an essential piece of the puzzle.

So far, we’ve trained around 60 counsellors, therapists and mental health practitioners within Barnardo’s to start identifying the hidden messages communicated through the body - often without the client even realising it themselves.

We’re continuing to roll this training out with learning that is practical, applicable and grounded in real therapeutic work.

If you’re ready to deepen your practice, come and train with us.

Most of us were taught to learn by sitting still, reading and remembering.

But David Kolb’s work on experiential learning reminds us that adults don’t just learn through information. We learn through doing, reflecting, making meaning and living experience.

Our Counsellors-in-Training are telling us how much they're gaining from learning with is because it's engaging on many levels:
– sensory
– emotional
– experiential
- reflective
And then the learning tends to stick.

In this week's Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling training, learners were relating theory to lived experience. And given free reign, they got creative, connected with parts of themselves and then connected more deeply with others.

It was beautiful 💙 and it will help set them up for future practice 🙌🏼

If you’re wanting CPD that goes beyond passive learning and actually supports how you practice, have a look at our courses.

Asking these three questions regularly can strengthen your learning as a counsellor-in-training.

Book learning will only take us so far. Much of our development happens in the doing and in the reflection that follows. Therefore after a session or skills practice, ask yourself:

* What was helpful?
* What wasn’t helpful?
* What would I do differently next time?

🚦 I sometimes think of this as a simple “traffic light” reflection.

* Green – what supported the work.
* Amber – what felt uncertain.
* Red – what you might approach differently next time.

Over time, this kind of consistent reflection supports reflexivity in practice and deepens your ability to stay alongside the client’s experience.
