It's Mental Health Awareness week. Personally I think every week should be. It affects us all so let's talk about it and end the stigma.
Having an awareness is great but what do we do with that awareness is also important. How do we respond to our own mental health and that of others.
I often think about my own journey and yes counsellors have dark times too, unfortunately the job doesn't make us immune to that. I have felt embarrassed in the past to talk about it, not any more, but why did I, I often ask myself that question, perceptions, lack of understanding, and expectations appear to play a part. Imagine a world where we could discuss it in much the same way as if we had a cold, where we felt able to tell our employer and not worry about the impact and where it isn't perceived as a weakness, I look forward to that day and as individuals we can all play a part in that by challenging our own perceptions and prejudices.
