This week marks the 50th anniversary of The King's Trust. In 2017, we piloted a ‘Get Into Hospital Services’ Programme with the King’s Trust and through this scheme we have been able to give 182 young people employment in the NHS. This programme is opening doors and building careers and we're so proud to be involved, a huge thank you to the King's Trust for their continued support👏❤️.

Our A&E team are working tirelessly to provide care to everyone but we are currently seeing an increasing number of patients with very serious conditions. This means there are longer waits and crowded waiting rooms. We are sorry if you are impacted and appreciate your understanding and patience.

To help, please make sure we keep our emergency care for those who need it most. If your condition isn’t life or limb-threatening, there are other services that might be able to help you more quickly:
✅ Minor Injuries Unit - Acorn Centre, Accrington
✅ Urgent Treatment Centres - Burnley and Blackburn
✅ Local Pharmacies and GPs
✅ NHS 111 - Available 24/7 for advice and guidance

Congratulations to colleagues from the Integrated Neighbourhood Team’s Frequent Attender Project , who were the winners of the "Community, Engagement and Partnerships" award from our Star Awards presentations🩵⭐. This award recognises exceptional collaborative work both across our Trust and with our partners, whose contributions – from primary care and local authorities to fellow NHS Trusts and voluntary organisations – are vital to delivering safe, personal and effective care. The judging panel praised all nominations for their high quality, reflecting the outstanding partnership work happening across ELHT but the INT Frequent Attender Project was chosen as the winner for its holistic, culturally sensitive, person centred approach. By coordinating community-based support for high-intensity Emergency Department users with complex needs, the initiative achieved a significant impact: attendances from the first 40 patients fell from 549 to 205 in just three months – a 59% reduction.

Congratulations👏.

Our patients having a partial knee replacement can now go home the same day thanks to a new day-case procedure at Burnley General Teaching Hospital. Developed by our orthopaedic, anaesthetic and physiotherapy teams, the pathway focuses on patient safety, confidence and independence, while maintaining the highest standards of care. This new approach supports recovery at home and helps more people receive surgery sooner.
Jason Fielding from Blackburn was the first patient to benefit and returned home just six hours after his operation, describing the experience as a great one💙🏠.

Congratulations to Biomedical Scientist Abraar Mahomed , who was recognised as "Unsung Hero" as part of our Star Awards presentations💚⭐. Although Abraar couldn’t attend on the night, his colleague Rizwan Shakir accepted the award on his behalf and shared the judges’ admiration for the remarkable impact he has on those around him saying that he is always the first person to help someone in need. The judges praised Abraar as “the embodiment of an unsung hero”, someone who quietly yet consistently goes above and beyond. His kindness, empathy and genuine commitment to supporting others shine through in everything he does.

Well done, Abraar👏.

Lately, our Emergency Department has been caring for more people who have had a fall. While falls can happen to any of us at any age, the winter weather can make people more susceptible.

There are some simple, easy ways to reduce the risk:

- Wear well-fitting footwear indoors and outdoors
- Avoid going out in bad weather unless essential; use online shopping or pharmacy deliveries
- Remove rugs and uneven carpets and use non-slip mats in the bath or shower
- Ask family, friends or neighbours for help with tasks, especially in icy conditions
- Consider installing safety rails on steps or grab rails in the bathroom
- Ensure your eyesight is checked and your prescription is up to date
- Stay active to improve balance and strength
- Eat well and stay hydrated to avoid dizziness or faintness

Our STEADY On! Team is dedicated to helping you stay safe, confident, and independent in your own home. You don't have to figure it out alone.

To refer yourself or a family member on their behalf contact the Intermediate Care Allocation Team (ICAT) on 01282 805989 and ask for a STEADY On! referral💚.

When someone is well enough to leave hospital, home is the best place to recover.

If you have a loved one ready to be discharged, please help us make their journey home as smooth as possible. Arrange transport if you can, and bring clean, comfortable clothes for them to wear. If you are able, check that their home is warm and welcoming, and make sure there’s something in the fridge for when they get back.

Every patient we can safely discharge frees up a bed for someone who urgently needs care. Thank you for helping us make this possible.

And please help us keep the Emergency Department for those who need it most. If it’s not life or limb-threatening, use NHS 111 online or by phone, your GP, pharmacy, an Urgent Treatment Centre or our Minor Injuries Unit. This makes a huge difference for patients who need emergency care.

If you are not sure which service would be suitable for your health needs, check out our website which has a guide, as well as live waiting times. Link is in the comments.
