Meet The Team - Peter!
Hi, I’m Peter, owner of Home Instead East Lancashire.
After 35 years working alongside my family in the motor trade, caring for people’s cars, my life took an unexpected turn into the world of social care.
It began when we realised my father’s memory issues were more than just part of getting older. Following a memory assessment, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. As a family, we made the difficult decision to sell our business and go our separate ways, as life began to change dramatically.
Over the following years, my mum bravely took on the role of primary carer. Like many families, we had no real understanding of dementia or where to turn for help. My brother and I did what we could while continuing to work, but in truth, we underestimated just how much physical and emotional strain falls on the main carer. Mum always told us she was managing — but looking back, we now know how much she was carrying alone.
We explored respite care and support services, but sadly, our experience was that they didn’t fully understand dementia or have the time to provide the level of care needed. So Mum carried on, doing everything she could for Dad until he passed away.
It was sometime later that I came across Home Instead. I was immediately drawn to their holistic, relationship-led approach to care. Although it came too late for my father, it struck a chord with me — knowing there must be so many other families facing the same challenges we had.
A few months later, I became the owner of Home Instead East Lancashire.
Sadly, one of my first clients was my own mum. After giving so much of herself caring for my dad, her own health had deteriorated significantly. That experience reinforced something I now strongly believe: it’s not just the individual who needs support — it’s the whole family.
With the right care in place, we were able to support Mum to remain at home, where she truly wanted to be. She passed away peacefully in her own bed — something that meant everything to her, and to us. Being able to help make that possible is something I will always be proud of.
That journey is why I am so passionate about what we do at Home Instead. We’re here to provide not just care, but understanding, dignity, and support for the entire family.
