Fuel Poverty Fact – Day 4: Who is Affected Most?

Yesterday was Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, and we’re continuing to highlight why this issue matters to our community.

Fuel poverty doesn’t impact everyone equally. In Blackburn with Darwen, single-parent households and families with young children are among the most affected, often having to prioritise essentials like food and rent instead of heating.

Growing up in a cold home can also influence a child’s development and education - but help is available. Visit the council’s Family Hub website linked in the comments below to find advice and information on the help available for young families. 👇

Louie has come to Blackburn with Darwen to support our families with potty learning. He has broken the approach down into three manageable steps to build the skills up bit by bit.

Step 2 is SLOW AND STEADY!

When starting to potty train your child it is important to make sure you start off slow and build up the potty sits so that they happen daily.

After nap times and 20-30 minutes after eating are good times for potty sits. This might mean that they sit on the potty around five or six times a day.

Don’t keep them on the potty for too long – five minutes is enough. Having the potty in the bathroom sets a good routine. Your child will need to use the bathroom soon, so you can start as you mean to go on and keep the potty there.

When sitting your child on the potty, ensure their knees are above their hips and are well supported, with their feet on a flat surface. This is the best position for emptying their bladder and bowels.

Praise your toddler if they poo or wee on the potty. Some children love seeing their progress on a potty-training chart. A chart can be used to record every poo or wee, or just simply for sitting on the potty and having a go. It is good to have some nappy off time after a poo or wee, so your child learns how this feels.

Fuel Poverty Fact – Day 3: The Efficiency Issue

Today is Fuel Poverty Awareness Day!

A low Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating means heat (and money) can easily escape through walls and roofs.

The good news is that improving home energy efficiency can make a huge difference. Cosy Homes in Lancashire can advise on grant schemes that may help you upgrade your home.

You can also access the Little Van of Warm service, which installs simple energy-saving measures free of charge (subject to eligibility).

Support is closer than you think: visit both services linked in the comments section below. 👇

Fuel Poverty Fact – Day 2: Fuel poverty is a major health issue

Tomorrow is Fuel Poverty Awareness Day and we’re continuing our mission to support households in need for help.

Living in a cold, damp home can increase the risk of respiratory problems, heart conditions and poor mental health, particularly for children and older people. Raising awareness helps us work together toward safer, warmer homes for everyone.

A cold house increases the likelihood of damp and mould. Find advice on how to treat these on our Damp & Mould prevention page linked below. 👇

There are many things you can do to help prevent damp and mould. Here are five top tips:
• Keep rooms heated between 18 – 21 degrees
• Open windows to release moisture if you can
• Cover pans when cooking
• Run cold water first when having a bath
• Dry clothes outside or in a well-ventilated room

These are some tips on how to reduce the moisture in the air and make sure the air can move around the house.

Louie has come to Blackburn with Darwen to support our families with potty learning. He has broken the approach down into three manageable steps to build the skills up bit by bit.

Step 1 START EARLY!

Starting early allows your baby to become familiar with the potty. When your baby can safely sit up without needing to be supported, start sitting them on a potty.

This is usually when they are around 6-8 months. We know this might feel early.

Keep in mind your child is unlikely to ‘get potty trained’ at this stage, it’s more about helping them become used to how it feels to sit on a potty.

If they do a wee or poo, have nappy-off time for around 30 minutes so they can get used to how this feels.
