March is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month 💚
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. About 55,100 people are diagnosed with it each year. It is more common over the age of 65 but can happen at a younger age. There is a higher risk of getting prostate cancer at a younger age if you are Black or have a strong family history of prostate cancer.
What symptoms do I need to be aware of?
The symptoms of benign prostate conditions and prostate cancer are similar. Some people will have both BPH and prostate cancer. Most prostate problems are not cancer but if you have any of these symptoms, it is important to have them checked by your GP:
- needing to p*e more often than usual, especially at night
- difficulty p*eing – for example, a weak flow or having to strain to start p*eing
- feeling like you have not completely emptied your bladder
- an urgent need to p*e • blood in your urine - sometimes this can only be found by a urine test
- blood in your semen
- pain when p*eing or ej*******ng – this is rare.
If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to have them checked by your doctor. Your GP can do tests to find out if you need a referral to a specialist doctor.
