New guidance for slush ice drinks

Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued new guidance that slush ice drinks containing glycerol should not be consumed by children under 7. Children under 10 should only be given one 350ml drink.

When buying a slush, make sure to check with the seller about the drink’s glycerol content, and don’t buy it if in doubt.

In young children, glycerol can cause:
- Sickness
- Headaches
- Hypoglycaemia (low sugar in blood)
- Shock

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAAs) are a weakening in the aorta that can swell and rupture, causing fatal internal bleeding. They don’t have symptoms and are most common in men aged 65 and over. Screening involves a quick, pain-free ultrasound and is the only way to find an AAA.

Last year, 2,425 men in Lancashire and South Cumbria did not attend their screening appointment – don’t be one of the men who misses out!

You will receive a letter in the post inviting you to an appointment at an NHS site near you. If you need to rearrange, you can call your AAA screening team on 0191 445 8747. You can also use this number to book an appointment if you are over 65 and have never been screened.

For more information, visit www.gatesheadhealth.nhs.uk/services/aaa/ and watch our AAA Video: https://fb.watch/7tORZvND2n/

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a bulge or swelling in the aorta. Screening for AAA is offered to all men aged over 65.
