Been a while since my last post, but it’s been an intense yet enjoyable few months at the club🙌🏻

It’s been a good personal challenge adapting to a lead physio role within full time football⏳

WHEN CAN YOU RUN POST ACL REPAIR?🏃

Have you recently injured your ACL? If so, this post will be of interest to you!

Returning to running is a major milestone in the ACL rehab process, and is a common activity that patients want to return to, but when is it SAFE to do so?❓🤷🏼

Rambaud (2018) suggested the above criteria in their study. 👆🏻

1) Minimal pain, below 2/10 ideally
2) Similar knee flexion to the unoperated side
3) Equal knee extension to the unoperated side
4) Minimal swelling around the knee
5) Quad and Hammy strength within 70% of the unoperated leg (this can estimated with capacity tests or with IKD/HHD systems if available)
6) Within 70% of the unoperated leg on a hop test battery (forward, lateral, triple)
7) Minimal dynamic valgus on functional tasks

If all of these are achieved, then a graded return to running programme can be started✅

It is important to consider attaining these criteria, rather than waiting X amount of time!📈

CERVICAL RADICULOPATHY⚡️

This condition is quite common, and should be considered in patients who are reporting neck pain +/- pain into the shoulder and arm🚨

In this post, I’ve tried to summarise the key anatomy, presentation and treatment options available for this condition✅

Do you need surgery for your mensical tear?!🔪

In this post, we look at a study by Kise et al (2016). They compared surgery and exercise therapy for the treatment of degenerative meniscal tears in a middle aged population👴

A 12 week, progressive exercise programme was completed by patients. Other patients received a partial menisectomy🤕

They found that surgery yields BETTER results in muscle strength and similar outcomes in knee function and quality of life❗️

What does this mean? Essentially, you can get all the benefits of surgery and more without even having surgery📈

Surgery can often been seen as a golden ticket to pain relief, but if more patients trialled a conservative approach first would we see stronger and more robust patients with less surgeries completed? What do you think👇🏻

CHRONIC EXERTIONAL COMPARTMENT SYNDROME🏃

CECS is an uncommon condition that effects the lower legs❗️

It presents as chronic, activity related pain and dysfunction that resolves with rest, and normally effects the anterior lower leg🤕

This is a condition I have only seen once in clinic, so I thought it’d be useful to summarise it✅

LOW BACK PAIN🤕

LBP can have various different causes, which can make it difficult to understand🙇🏼‍♂️

In this post, I’ve tried to summarise each classification of back pain and how they differentiate from each other✅

LBP is a complex condition, with various biological, psychological and social factors that can all play a part in a patients experience. It is vital that we look away from just the biological factors and consider a holistic approach to LBP treatment📈

MEDIAL ANKLE SPRAINS🤕

Often overshadowed by the lateral ankle sprain, medial ankle sprains can still occur with activity🚨

The deltoid ligament is often presented as separate entities, however in reality it forms a singular, thick and broad ligament across the medial ankle joint💪🏻

It can often be injured with forced eversion or external rotation, whether that’s during a slip, trip or fall, or during sports⚽️

ADDUCTOR STRAIN INJURIES❗️

Adductor injuries are highly common across many sports, especially those that require high intensity change of direction and kicking⚽️

Aspetar (Doha, Qatar) have developed an effective adductor rehab protocol which has shown some promising results📈

This post gives a quick overview of the adductors and the protocol itself. I will follow up the post with an exercise video to go through the gym based progressions🏋🏼‍♂️

RE**US FEMORIS INJURIES🤕

Rec Fem injuries are common across field based sports, especially those that require repetitive kicking actions⚽️

It’s important to understand the anatomy, clinical signs and key rehab considerations when treating these patients in clinic🤷🏼
