Our ground floor showroom holds around 150 different models of electric scooter and electric wheelchair, from the smallest three wheel folding scooters and traditional folding wheelchairs, to the biggest and most powerful 'all terrain' electric buggies, and the most sophisticated outdoor powerchairs. Our 1st floor showroom hosts a large display of power-assisted furniture, including orthopaedic beds and riser-recliner armchairs, plus working displays of a variety of bathing aids, door entry baths and bath lifts of every type. We not only supply new equipment but also reconditioned scooters and pre-owned powerchairs that offer exceptional value for money. Interesting fact:

One of the best documented early examples of the wheelchair was made for Phillip II of Spain (1527-1598) in 1595. In the later years of his life, Phillip II lived with severe gout which made it difficult for him to walk. The wheelchair that was created for him was, as you would expect, fit for a king. It had an elaborate design with plush upholstery, arm and leg rests, and four small wheels that meant that he needed to be pushed around by a servant. Phillip II’s affluence enabled him to benefit from the best assistive technologies of his time. Such luxury mobility aids would not have been available for less wealthy people.

The self-propelled wheelchair
While early wheelchairs improved the lives of disabled people by allowing them to live a life outside of the home, they could not be operated autonomously. The first self-propelled wheelchair was invented in 1655 in Nuremberg, Germany by a paraplegic clockmaker called Stephen Farfler (1633-1689). Farfler had broken his back as a child, and this had rendered him paralyzed from the waist down.

At the age of only 22, Farfler used his mechanical expertise as a clockmaker to create a wheeled chair that would allow him to move independently. The frame was based on a three-wheel chassis and worked by turning handles attached to a geared front wheel using a system of cranks and cogwheels.

Mechanical wheelchairs increased in use from the 17th century onwards. A more modern design of the self-propelled wheelchair was popularised by inventor John Joseph Merlin (1735-1803). Merlin’s design used gears and cranks to propel users. The design was so popular that wheelchairs were referred to as ‘Merlin chairs’ for near too a century after his death. They were featured widely in medical equipment catalogues in the 19th century, where they were advertised for patients with gout and other illnesses that affected mobility.

The design principles employed by the likes of Farfler and Merlin can be seen in wheelchairs in the Science Museum Collection made many years later. This example, built between 1910 and 1920, has three main wheels and is driven via chains by two-hand cranks on either side of the rider.

Can I travel with my mobility scooter or powerchair on a Bus?

This is the information we have gathered from Blackpool transport and was correct at the time of posting.

Travelling with a wheelchair or powerchair:
Wheelchair users have priority use of the wheelchair space on our buses, as this is the only place in which wheelchair users can travel safely.
We urge our customers to offer their cooperation in making the wheelchair space available for wheelchair users when required.
If the wheelchair space is occupied with a pushchair, the driver will ask the customer to make use of any available space on the bus by either repositioning or folding down their pushchair, where this is possible.
Unfortunately, if a customer with a pushchair refuses to move, is unable to fold down their pushchair or if there is insufficient space elsewhere on the bus, the wheelchair user will be unable to board.
Our drivers will endeavour to ensure a wheelchair user is able to board at all times but are reliant on the goodwill of customers. In situations where the bus is full, or there is already a wheelchair user on board, we will unfortunately not be able to carry another wheelchair user.

Travelling with a mobility scooter:
This is entirely at our own discretion, we agree to carry mobility scooters in our designated wheelchair spaces. We will only accept class 2 scooters that are no more than 600mm wide and 1000mm long with a turning radius not exceeding 1200mm. Where there is some doubt as to the compatibility of a mobility scooter, we will arrange to assess the Mobility Scooter and determine whether it complies. If it complies, we will provide a pass for the user to carry with them to avoid any dispute.

We would recommend contacting Blackpool transport should you wish to query whether they will accept your mobility scooter - they can be contacted on 01253 473001 (opening hours Monday to Friday, 11am to 3pm).

Can I take my mobility scooter or powerchair on an aeroplane?

Yes, you can take your mobility scooter on a plane, so long as you make the right preparations. By alerting the airline that you intend to travel with a scooter or powerchair, you can make the experience altogether less stressful.

First, we’d recommend you inform your airline at least 48 hours before departure if you’ll need assistance. By doing this, staff can prepare for your arrival and ensure you have help at specific points. If you have a disability that affects your mobility, you have the right to specific assistance at UK and EU airports.

Where is the scooter stored in the plane?

The chair or scooter you’re taking away will be installed in the plane's hold.
You won’t be able to board the plane on your personal mobility product, instead, you’ll be transferred into a transfer chair (provided by the airport) to be taken to your dedicated aisle wheelchair.

As the hold also carries passenger baggage, cargo and possibly other mobility aids, airlines must impose size restrictions to ensure there’s enough space.

Can you take a class 3 mobility scooter on a plane?

Whether you can take a class 3 mobility scooter on a plane depends on the airline you’re boarding with and the size of the battery.

The Civil Aviation Authority has recently imposed regulations on the size of lithium-ion batteries that can be carried on aircraft.

While scooter size restrictions vary from airline to airline, a vehicle with a 24v 14.5ah battery is not CAA-compliant and cannot be transported in the hold.

As always, we recommend checking with your travel agent before booking to ensure they are able to take your specific mobility product,

Jaz was completely over the moon with her new scooter. When I delivered it this morning, she handed me this lovely canvas she'd made 🥰
I've had a few wobbles recently about whether I'd still like to continue my journey in the mobility industry and receiving gifts like this, makes me realise I'm right where I need to be!! It's never been a job for me, it's always been a hobby as it's something I enjoy doing.
Have a great weekend - enjoy the sunshine and make sure to check in on your neighbours.

This week I wanted to share some information about travelling with your mobility scooters or powerchair.

Train travel in the North - Northern Rail require you to obtain a permit if you are a regular traveller with your mobility scooter.

Can I take my mobility scooter on Northern trains?

To make the best use of these improvements, following a successful trial, Northern Rail are now able to offer their customers who use mobility scooters better access at more than 100 stations, which are also accessible.

They welcome applications for a scooter “Rail Ready” permit from users of both 3 and 4-wheel vehicles. All they ask is that they meet the following criteria:

*The scooter must be a class 2 vehicle with a maximum speed of 4mph
*Maximum length of 120cm and width of 70cm (standard wheelchair footprint)
*Turning radius of no larger than 150cm
*Maximum weight including rider is no more than 300kg (47 stone)

To apply for a scooter “Rail Ready” permit, follow the link below.

https://northernrail.my.site.com/s/scooter-permit

What happens if the scooter meets the requirements?

If your scooter meets the requirements of the scheme, they will send you a personalised card and a sticker that must be displayed on your scooter. This does not replace your ticket, and you will need to purchase the appropriate ticket for your journey. Please be aware that the information in this leaflet and mobility scooter badge applies to Northern services only. For travel on other operators' services, you must check the individual mobility scooter policies before travel.

Follow these steps when taking your mobility scooter on a Northern train:

*Do not cross the yellow line on the platform before the train arrives. They also ask that any shopping or luggage be removed from mobility scooters prior to boarding, as these items can affect the balance of the vehicle.
*They will put the ramp down so that you can board the wheelchair area of the train. If you are travelling without a companion, they will bring any shopping or luggage you are travelling with. When onboard, please turn off your scooter, apply the brakes, and, if possible, transfer to a seat.
*They recommend that you book in advance, but are happy to accommodate you (if there is space available on the train) if you choose not to do so. Their Travel Assistance Team are available to help with any bookings or advice, they can be contacted on 0800 138 5560.

Adjustable beds don't have to stand out - unless you want them to!! And boy does the Carrington from Opera do just that 😍

Choosing the right adjustable bed can make a world of difference for you and your partner. At Opera Beds, they offer a wide range of dual adjustable beds and double adjustable beds, designed to provide personalised comfort and support. Whether you have different sleep preferences or require additional features for health and mobility needs, their beds allow each person to enjoy a tailored sleep experience without compromise.

If getting in and out of bed is a concern, their motion elevation kit is an excellent solution. It’s compatible with their adjustable beds and helps maintain independence while reducing the risk of falls.

It's a breeze to use 🤩

Sitting Pretty has launched a new riser recliner which enables independent adjustment of its backrest and footrest to help the user find their perfect position.
Its advanced design features four independent motors, dedicated lumbar support, and tilt-in-space technology which enables the user to tilt the chair while they are seated or reclined.
Users can elevate their feet above hip level in a zero-gravity position, making it ideal for relieving pressure points and improving circulation.
Available in silver and stone and 3 sizes, the Premier Breeze Riser Recliner comes in the Dorchester style of lift chairs featuring scrolled arms, a waterfall back and elegant wings. Lithium battery back-up ensures the chair is powered during outages.
