Should you be using a treadmill when managing an injury🤔

Although treadmill running can be a great way to manage impact, load and intensity when injured, it’s important to consider whether you could be doing more harm than good.

Research suggests that treadmill running causes alterations in our GAIT cycle (running style) to take place, with a common change being a reduction in stride length.

Injuries that can be negatively effected by this include -
🔹 Calf & Achilles injuries - A shortened stride length often pushes us into forefoot running, which will place a greater demand on the calf and Achilles tendon.
🔹ITB pain - Which can be negatively affected by long durations of flat and straight line running.
🔹Runners knee - This change in running GAIT can often distribute more load into the patella femoral joint (taking load off the hip joint), and therefore aggravate running associated knee pain.

So although treadmill running can be a great way to manage an injury, it’s important to speak to a professional, and consider the type of injury that you’re suffering with!
