Mythbusting Monday continues…

Each week in our Cancer Mythbusters series, we take a common misconception about cancer and shine a light on the facts. Myths can quietly influence how people think about symptoms, treatment, and support. By challenging them, we help create a community that is informed, compassionate, and proactive about health.

Today’s myth:

“Cancer only runs in families.”

Many people believe that if there’s no history of cancer in their family, they’re unlikely to develop it. While family history can increase risk for some cancers, most cancers are not inherited.

In fact, the majority of cancers develop because of a combination of factors such as lifestyle, environment, ageing, and random changes in cells over time. That means cancer can affect people even when there is no known family history.

This myth can lead some people to dismiss symptoms or delay getting checked because they believe they are “not at risk.”

The truth is, anyone can develop cancer, which is why awareness, screening, and paying attention to changes in your body are so important.

Knowing your family history is helpful, but it’s only one piece of a much bigger picture.

If you’d like to help share accurate information and encourage people in our community to take their health seriously, consider becoming a Cancer Awareness Champion.

What a wonderful way to conclude our block of Gardening for Beginners - with even our indoor group getting stuck into some soil & repotting a load of lovely plants to take home!

We'll be revisiting the garden in April, and are excited to be able to plant out the sweetpea seedlings we potted in week 1 - which are currently keeping warm indoors with lots of lovely shoots beginning to rear their heads... Not long after that will be potato harvest, and we can't wait to learn together about what other seasonal tasty treats we could grow here across the year 🤩

In the meantime however, the Tuesday group will be onto ventures new with a few weeks of knitting for beginners (alternative also fabric crafts available for resolute non-knitters 😁)

Any excuse for a day trip, Martha took off to The Blackpool Sixth Form College today for a special International Women's Day career event. Students from the Sixth Form and local schools were invited to the college for a full day of careers chaos, including a skills-themed supermarket sweep, collecting as many different soft skills that women use in their day-to-day work!

Martha talked about how she uses the skills of empathy, creativity, listening and so many more (herding cats comes to mind, with some of our groups!) but most importantly, we LOVED hearing from the young people and encouraging them to get involved with our young volunteering programme (11-17yr olds) or ad-hoc opportunities to share their vast array of talents - whether you're studying film media, fashion, economics or something else entirely - we found there's something for EVERYONE to gain when volunteering with BFriend, just come along and join the party 🤩🥳

Another productive day last week, for week 3 of Gardening for Beginners! Still 1 week left, don't miss your chance to pick up a few skills and make a lasting mark on our lovely community garden in the heart of Blackpool ❤️

📍 1pm Tuesday at Holy Cross Church, Central Drive

Lots of clearing and tidying has been done, with only some bulbs, flowers and potatoes left to go in the ground - we can't wait to help you get stuck in 🌿

Mythbusting Monday continues…

Each week we take a closer look at common myths about cancer and replace them with clear, supportive facts. Misunderstandings can stop people from asking questions, seeking help, or supporting others. Knowledge helps us do better for ourselves and for our community.

Today’s myth:

“A lump always means cancer.”

Finding a lump can feel frightening, and it’s natural for your mind to jump to the worst conclusion. But the truth is that many lumps are not cancerous.

Lumps can be caused by many things, including cysts, infections, swollen glands, or other harmless conditions. However, the important thing is not to ignore it.

Getting a lump checked by a healthcare professional is the safest step. Most of the time, it won’t be cancer. But if something does need attention, finding it early gives you more options and better outcomes.

So remember:
Don’t panic. But don’t ignore it either.

Check it. Don’t chance it.

If you’d like to help share accurate information and encourage people to look after their health, consider becoming a Cancer Awareness Champion.
