Veterinary Physiotherapy can be beneficial for a variety of conditions in horses and dogs:
-Maintaining high performance in horses and dogs
-Sports and working injuries and difficulties
-Neck, back and pelvic pain
-Joint problems
-Muscle, ligament and tendon injuries
-Muscle imbalance or weakness
-Post-surgical rehabilitation, orthopaedic and neurological
-Neurological conditions or injuries
-Prev

entative physiotherapy to avoid recurrence of a problem
-Rider/horse combinations
-To optimise physical state whilst on box rest
-For post-race and post-event treatment

Veterinary Physiotherapy may help identify physical issues presenting in the form of poor performance, schooling or behavioural changes. A thorough assessment will be carried out to plan an individual treatment programme specific to your animal's goals. Depending on what is most effective for your animal's requirements, treatment usually consists of a combination of "hands-on" techniques, electrotherapy, exercises, and rehabilitation such as:

-Joint mobilisations
-Soft Tissue techniques (massage, trigger point and myofascial release)
-Reflex Inhibition using the animal's natural reflexes to encourage stretch and joint movement.
-Electrotherapy (Laser, neuromuscular stimulation, TENs)
-Stretches
-Expert Advice and support
-Exercise regimes and rehabilitation to improve balance, strength and stability. It is a legal requirement of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 that ANY type of therapist treating your animal must have authorisation from your vet

Wise advice for your horses during this weather ☀️

🌡️ HOT WEATHER & HORSE WELFARE 🌡️

As temperatures rise, it’s important to understand how heat affects horses and what riders can do to reduce the risk of Exertional Heat Illness (EHI).

Research shows horses perform best in temperatures between 5–25°C — and even acclimatised horses cannot perform as well in hot weather as they can in cooler conditions.
In the heat, horses:
• Tire more quickly
• Recover more slowly
• Are more likely to make mistakes
• Become hotter during exercise
• Face increased risk of heat illness, colic and laminitis

⏱️ Horses need time to acclimatise
Most horses need around 10–14 days of exercising in hot conditions to acclimatise effectively.
If the weather suddenly becomes hot, horses will NOT be acclimatised — and a few days of riding in the hottest part of the day can actually make things worse.
If you don’t have time to acclimatise your horse:
• Reduce workload and intensity
• Shorten warm ups
• Train during cooler parts of the day
• Allow longer recovery periods
• Prioritise cooling before and after exercise
• Consider dropping down a class if needed

🐴 Horses at greater risk of overheating include:
• Unfit or overweight horses
• Large or heavy breeds
• Very young or older horses
• Horses with dark/heavy coats
• Horses with health conditions such as asthma or PPID
• Horses carrying heavier rider/tack combinations

🚿 The BEST way to cool a hot horse?
Research strongly supports:
✅ Continuous cold water application
✅ Cooling the entire body
✅ Using fans and airflow
❌ NOT scraping water off
A wet horse cools faster than a dry horse — and scraping slows the cooling process.

💧 Top cooling tips:
• Apply plenty of cold water all over the horse
• Keep water flowing continuously
• Use shade and airflow where possible
• Offer free access to water before, during and after exercise

🚨 Signs a horse may be dangerously hot:
• Heavy or rapid breathing
• Excessive sweating
• Flared nostrils
• Muscle spasms
• Lethargy or distress
• Unsteadiness

If concerned, start cooling IMMEDIATELY and seek veterinary advice if the horse is not improving quickly.

🐴 Hello all 🐴

Polite reminder to please respond to offers of appointments promptly. With high costs of fuel it is more important than ever to group areas together. I don’t know what I can offer everyone until others have confirmed.
I’m always grateful for everyone’s patience with getting an appointment, I cover a large area and can’t be in Weymouth the same day as Downton…

Physio day. Normally a moment of calm and relaxation. But Rabbit heard a quad bike and decided the hunt was about.
So instead of her droopy donkey impersonation, we were treated to an overexcited giraffe! Poor Lily Jackson got buffeted off her step stool more than once 🙈 but miraculously managed to do all she needed to do.
Still, Rabs did a stonking trot up (we were lucky to survive that!), all her whirly, flexi bits were A1 and she looked as strong as an ox. 💪
Lily slapped the electro-magnetic (I dunno, I may have made that up) pads on her back to help her relax but I fear they may have just recharged her batteries! 🤣

Sorry for lack of content here recently, just been such a busy bee 🐝 with work and life.
But here’s a lovely photo of the handsome Balu enjoying his physio treatment at AC Equestrian 🤎

First physio sesh for Brego.
After being under saddle for a couple of months (and jumping out of his stable!), it was time to get him professionally assessed and treated by our excellent (and now !) physio, Lily Jackson.
Bregs is soooooo different to Rabs. She leans in to her favourite bits and falls asleep. He didn’t even seem to notice he was being squidged and squeezed 🤣
The chonk just carried on stuffing and let her do whatever she needed to do. He couldn’t be arsed to do a long trot-up (we need to work on that critical endurance skill!) but just enough to scrape by 😂😆
Lily approves of the little cube pony (he’s as broad as he is tall!). He is symmetrical, balanced and strong 💪
An A for his first exam. Top stuff.
