November is , which is all about raising awareness of the signs and symptoms to help with early detection, as well as highlighting the support services available for those affected.
Mouth cancer - also called oral cancer - can develop in any part of the mouth, and is one of the most common head and neck cancers. Common signs to look out for can include:
❗ A mouth ulcer or sore that doesn’t heal within 3 weeks
❗ Pain, discomfort or red/white patches in the mouth
❗ Changes on the lips, gums, tongue, or inside the cheeks
If something doesn’t feel right or you spot anything unusual, contact your GP as soon as possible. Early checks make a big difference.
Whether you’re worried about symptoms of mouth cancer, living with a diagnosis, or supporting someone who is, Cancer Care Map is here to help, with lots of listings on our site specifically for this type of cancer. Some good places to start:
1️⃣ Mouth Cancer Foundation - offers information and support, including a phone helpline manned by someone with lived experience of mouth cancer, a Facebook group, workshops and support groups (local and also online via Zoom on Mondays at 7pm.) Call their helpline on 01924 950 950.
2️⃣ Head & Neck Cancer UK (HANCUK) - offers information and advice and raises awareness of the condition. This includes real life written accounts from people, and signposting to local support groups.
3️⃣ YoungTongues - made up of people in their 20s - early 60s who have been diagnosed with tongue cancer. The group shares information, advice, and personal experiences, and hosts regular virtual meet ups. It also has a podcast.
4️⃣ The Swallows Head & Neck Cancer Support Group - offers peer support, information, advice and signposting. Monthly online meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month, as well as other face-to-face meetings in locations around the UK. It also offers a range of Facebook groups to join, and can offer support by text message.
Most Maggie's Centres and Macmillan Cancer Support centres also often have specific support groups for head and neck cancers.
