September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month – raising awareness of the symptoms of thyroid cancer, the importance of early detection, and to highlight the support available for those affected.
The most common early sign of thyroid cancer is a lump in the neck, usually found at the front, just below the Adam’s apple. As thyroid cancer can be slow growing, the lump may have been there for some time. It's important to note that thyroid cancer can affect people of all ages.
Any lump or change in your neck should be checked by a doctor. When caught early, most cases of thyroid cancer can be cured.
As always, Cancer Care Map is here to offer support to anyone affected, including loved ones and carers.
Some good places to start are:
✅ Thyroid UK - support includes resources to help with diagnosing, managing and understanding thyroid conditions, support groups, and support via phone, email, page and online community.
✅ Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust - puts people living with thyroid cancer in touch with others who have been through the same treatment and surgery. It offers information, clinical support, local groups, and a helpline.
✅ British Thyroid Foundation - has a network of local support groups which hold regular meetings and usually include talks by medical professionals. It also offers a phone service with volunteers available to provide a listening ear, a medical query answering service and a closed Facebook group which you can request to join.
Many Maggie's Centres and Macmillan Cancer Support centres also often have specific support groups for thyroid cancer.
