Great post my good friend Emma Jo from the West End Foot Clinic has made about footwear!
I have been chatting loads recently regarding footwear and ensuring that your footwear fits you properly!
Do you and your children get your feet measured?
It’s quite important to have your feet measured properly at different stages of life — both as a child and as an adult — but for slightly different reasons:
For children:
• Children’s feet grow rapidly and unpredictably. Incorrect shoe size can lead to long-term foot problems like deformities (e.g., bunions, hammertoes), poor posture, and pain.
• Ill-fitting shoes can also affect balance and coordination as children develop motor skills.
• Regular measurement (every few months) ensures shoes are supportive, fit properly, and don’t restrict healthy foot development.
For adults:
• Foot size can change over time due to weight changes, pregnancy, aging, or health conditions like diabetes or arthritis.
• Wearing the wrong size shoes as an adult can cause issues like blisters, corns, calluses, joint pain, and even more serious conditions like plantar fasciitis.
• Properly fitting shoes support overall posture and help prevent knee, hip, and back problems.
In short:
• Children should have feet measured regularly to support natural growth and prevent future problems.
• Adults should have feet measured occasionally, especially if they notice discomfort, start new physical activities, or experience life changes that might affect foot size.
