Barcelona is a fantastic city for those partial to travelling and exploring. There's so much going for this city, but after visiting in July, I've found another reason why it's so great..... it's very wheelchair friendly! As you wander the streets, you can see how wheelchair friendly it is.

Some European cities have large cobble stones on the surface, making it hard for wheelchair users to navigate these roads. However, Barcelona has really smooth footpaths that allow wheelchair users to get around more easily.

Apart from smooth footpaths, there's other things we noticed, such as;

♥️ Shallow curbs to make road-crossings easy
♥️ Lots of outdoor seating
♥️ Ramps next to steps

Even at airport security, they have a separate queue for wheelchair users.

For families with wheelchair users, it's one of the first things they'll look at when deciding on holiday destinations...how easy is it to get around with a wheelchair?

I'd love to hear from you if you've have travelled abroad and what you noticed from an accessibility point of view, especially if you travelled with a wheelchair user!

When you hear the word 'Botox' what comes to mind? Celebs trying to battle the ageing process, like Simon Cowell or Cher?

This may be true! However, Botox plays a role in the treatment of individuals with disabilities.
All children with neurological conditions present differently. However, one common symptom is tight muscles. The increased muscle tone and spasticity caused by changes in the nerve pathways between the brain and muscles can cause stiff muscles. In some cases, the muscles can shorten permanently, known as a muscle contracture.

Botox paralyses the muscle that it's injected into. For example, when you frown, you are shortening the muscles in your forehead. Botox paralyses the muscle and prevents you from frowning. For children with a disability, Botox can help to lengthen muscles that are very stiff.

The effect of the Botox injection may last weeks or months, which creates a window of opportunity for therapists and family to work on specific things such as increasing strength and movement.

Botox could also be used as a primary treatment to avoid or delay surgery in the future.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you've learnt that Botox does more than make people look younger!

Hip Dysplasia is a condition where the hip doesn’t fit perfectly into the pelvis. There can be various degrees of hip dysplasia, depending on how far out the hip is out of the pelvis. According to the International Hip Dysplasia Institute, only 2-3 out of every 1000 children with hip dysplasia require surgery. There are certain factors that increase the risk of hip dysplasia at birth, such as;

🔴 Breech position (born feet first)
🔴 1st born child
🔴 Child's s*x being female

Last year, I was lucky enough to work with Avnoor. Avnoor developed hip dysplasia at birth (born breech, 1st child and female) and was diagnosed a few weeks later. At 5 months of age, Avnoor required surgery to put her hip back into position. This was followed by 90 days in a cast (hip spica) to allow her hip to heal. After her cast was removed, her parents reached out to me for a physiotherapy appointment. Avnoor was 14 months old and had just begun crawling.

7 months later and Avnoor was walking by herself! It was great to see the hard work Avnoor and her parents put in was paying off. Her hip dysplasia journey had a profound impact on her and her parents, but in the long run, they believe it has helped put life into perspective. They have learnt to appreciate all of Avnoor’s achievements, great or small.

Thanks to Avnoor’s parents, Pav and Tahren, for allowing me into their home to work with Avnoor and discuss their hip dysplasia journey.

The word plagiocephaly has Greek origins. Plagios = ‘oblique’ or ‘slanting’ and kephali = head. Plagiocephaly is the formation of flat spots on a baby’s head. This is commonly caused by babies spending a lot of time lying on their back. Babies have spent more time lying on their back since the ‘back to sleep’ campaign that started in the 90s. This was to raise awareness of the safety risks associated with babies sleeping on their tummy. The campaign was successful in reducing the number of fatalities. There are also more baby’s with flat spots on their head since the back to sleep campaign began.

Some parents have asked me if a helmet would help correct the flat spot on their child’s head. The short answer is;

A HELMET SHOULD BE LAST RESORT FOR MORE SEVERE CASES OF PLAGIOCEPHALY AFTER HAVING TRIED CONSERVATIVE MANAGEMENT FIRST.

Conservative strategies should be considered first, such as reducing the time your child spends lying on their back. This could be done by increasing tummy time whilst they’re awake or using a baby carrier instead of a pram.

This is also backed by research. A systematic review (a study that analyses hundreds of research articles on a specific topic) concluded that repositioning and physiotherapy in the early stages are very effective in correcting flat spots on baby’s heads.

So, although a helmet may be required in severe cases, in most cases, repositioning and physiotherapy are effective in treating plagiocephaly.

If you think your child may have Plagiocephaly and are unsure what to do, it’s best to speak to your healthcare professional.
