Our Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners recently attended a local community club in West Cornwall. They shared support options that are available for those who are aged 65 and over to help improve wellbeing.

From changes in routine due to retirement to living with a long-term health condition, sometimes this time of life can be challenging and lead to difficulties with low mood or worrying thoughts.

Our Young at Heart course is a 4-week educational course which explores how to improve wellbeing and live well in later life.

It was recently International Optimism Day. A reminder to look for the good, even when life feels heavy. Optimism isn’t about pretending everything is perfect or about ignoring the challenges we face, it is about believing that things can get better.

Today is time to talk day, encouraging people to have conversations about mental health.

A small conversation can make a big difference and can reduce stigma and help people feel comfortable to seek help when they need it.

Whether it is a quick message to a friend or family member, a cup of tea with a colleague, or a walk with a friend, take a moment to connect and check in.

Tips for supporting someone else this

🔹Ask questions and listen - Asking questions can give the person space to share how they’re feeling and what they’re going through. Try to ask questions that are open and non-judgmental, like ‘what does that feel like?’

🔹Encourage them - Small verbal comments like ‘I see’ or ‘what happened next?’ will let them know you are paying attention to them and actively listening.

🔹Don't try and fix it - Try to resist the urge to offer quick fixes to what someone is going through. Just talking can be really powerful, so unless they’ve asked for advice directly, it might be best just to listen.

🔹Challenge myths - Mental health problems are more common than people think. They can affect anyone at any time. Comments like ‘Pull yourself together’ or ‘You’re just having a bad day’ are not helpful.

🔹Be patient - No matter how hard you try, some people might not be ready to talk about what they’re going through. That’s ok – the fact that you’ve tried to talk to them about it may make it easier for them to open up another time. It’s important to let them set the pace for seeking support themselves.

Menopause can have a big impact on your daily life, including relationships, social life, family life and work.

It brings a range of physical symptoms, but it can also impact mental health. This can include low mood, anxiety, mood swings and low self-esteem, as well as problems with memory or concentration. Daily activities that you previously took in your stride may now feel overwhelming.

If you can relate to this, you might consider our course on menopause health and wellbeing. The focus is on learning more about the impact of the menopause and ways to adapt and live well, through and beyond the menopause.

Courses currently run over 5 weeks online, and are free to attend.
