I am Elaine Iljon Foreman BA (Hons), M.Sc., AFBPsS, a Consultant Chartered ClinicalPsychologist specialising in the treatment of fear of flying and other anxiety related problems.

My highly specialised treatment programme is based on over 30 years of clinical experience, and her ongoing research and development of cognitive behaviour therapy,

A fear of flying is not just a fear of airplanes. Research shows that flying anxieties can be divided into two groups. Some fear the loss of external control, worrying about plane crashes due to turbulence and heights. Others fear the loss of internal control, dreading panic attacks, bodily catastrophes, and being trapped without help. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is the most successful form of therapy for overcoming this fear.

Navigating the Post-Christmas Blues 🙁

As a CBT counsellor, I want to address a common feeling many experience between Christmas and New Year: a sense of low mood. Here are some points to consider:

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: It’s normal to feel low after the holidays. Recognising these emotions is essential.

2. Reflect on Expectations: Holiday expectations can lead to disappointment. Reflect on the difference between what you expected and reality.

3. Practice Mindfulness: Use mindfulness techniques to focus on the present and appreciate small joys.

4. Set Realistic Goals: Instead of overwhelming resolutions, set small, achievable goals for the New Year.

5. Connect with Others: Reach out to friends or family to share your feelings and foster connection.

6. Seek Professional Support: If sadness persists, consider professional help for coping strategies.

It’s normal to feel low during this time. Be kind to yourself as you recharge for the New Year ahead. 💙
