When you feel a conflict with your child arising, the first step is always: BREATHE!
We can always repair it.
See if you can go back to what happened between you and your child.
Can you see what your role was it?
What patterns do you recognize from your child?
What patterns do you recognize from your own relationship with your parents?
Can you understand what made your child so angry?
Can you let go of your pride?
Can you go back to your child with open and compassionate heart?

Think of three words that describe your relationship with your child. Do these words resemble those that you would use to describe memories of your childhood experiences with your own parents? How do they differ? Do these words accurately summarize these relationships? Are there parts of your memories of these important relationships that do not fit well with these generalizations? How do these expectations fit into the broader story of your life with your parents and with your child?

What do we miss seeing in our children?
Do you know the invisible gorilla awareness test recorder by Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris?
You might want to take the original test before continuing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJG698U2Mvo
How was your experience with it?
It is a compelling evidence that we don’t see what is in front of us if it doesn’t fit with our expectations.
So, explore these questions:
Do you truly see your child?
How do you really perceive your own child?
What do you miss seeing in your child?
Have you noticed any patterns, beliefs or expectations that hinder you seeing your child non-judgementally?

How to Parent with a Beginner’s Mind
Beginner's mind parenting is an approach that involves seeing your child and their experiences with a sense of curiosity and freshness, free from biases, expectations, or past judgments. It means approaching each day and interaction as a new experience, observing your child without labels, and learning to be a beginner alongside them.
Consider this example: Your 15-year-old child is failing English, which is difficult for you because you have always been good at it.
There are two ways you might respond. For instance:
1. ‘What is going on with your English? Don’t you see you need to work harder? I am going to organise a tutor!’
2. ‘I am a bit surprised by your English result. How can I help you?’
The second response is much more open, inclusive and non-judgmental. There is space for the child to be seen, heard, and valued.
A beginner’s mind can be an incredibly powerful tool to maintain a healthy relationship with your child. To get started, try to:
• Start with the intention of learning something new about your child.
• Listen to them deeply and hold back ‘fix-it ‘ responses if they express a worry or behave differently.
• Be curious and non-judgmental. This will allow your child to connect with how they feel and find the words to explain their experience.
