Bolton Hospice Providing expert care & support for the people of Bolton who have terminal and life-limiting illnesses, and their families.
(274)

We're an independent charity, and our services are free. Our team of doctors, nurses and other professional staff provide specialist care and support for local people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses and their families, in the hospice and at home. We provide care throughout a patient’s illness, so they achieve the best possible quality of life. This includes end of life care, helping them to achieve a good death. We're a charity mainly funded by local people. Together we need to raise around £4 million a year to continue to provide our services for free.

This , we're saying a heartfelt thank you to Alison and her family, for her generous legacy donation, and passion for sharing her and her husband Andrew's story to inspire others to do the same 💜

Alison and Andrew met in 1984, as teenagers, and from day one were inseparable. They married 7 years later, and working as a technical accountant and a bedroom fitter, they built their lives together, buying a house, enjoying holidays, and most of all always being there for each other.

In 2018, Andrew was diagnosed with cancer, and after he failed to respond to treatment, accessed Bolton Hospice's specialist care and support:

"From the first phone call, they were amazing, full of care, honesty and compassion. Andrew moved to the hospice, and in that place of kindness, Alison and Andrew renewed their vows and made precious memories."

When Andrew died, Alison slowly began to find her new path, travelling, spending time with her beloved niece and nephew, and supporting the hospice through fundraising. Then in 2024 Alison herself was diagnosed with an aggressive, terminal cancer:

"Alison began palliative treatment and fought with quiet determination, and once again we reached out to Bolton Hospice. Alison wanted to access complementary therapies - massages, in her words, made her feel normal. When the time came, she made the decision she would return to the hospice.

"The team at the hospice were exceptional, from consultants to volunteers, when everything felt too much, they quietly shared their love. Even in her final days, Alison remained kind, gracious, and full of dignity.

"I share this story as Alison's little sister. The world feels darker without the light of Alison and Andrew in it, but I will always be thankful to Bolton Hospice - a place not to be feared, a place filled with angels.

"Alison wished to leave a legacy donation, in her and Andrew's memory, so others could receive the same wonderful care as them."

If, like Alison, you'd like to find out more about making a lasting difference and leaving a gift in your will, we've put together lots of useful information here 👇

Today we're saying an extra special thank you to Philip, who recently made a £20,000 donation to Bolton Hospice in memory of his late wife, Marilyn 💜

Married for over 50 years, Philip fondly remembers the start of their relationship, with the pair saving up to play pinball and dominos in their local pub on Church Road. Years later and still a big fan of a fun game, Marilyn would organise bingo street parties, keeping her neighbours connected in lockdown.

Marilyn's commitment to supporting her local community extended to Bolton Hospice, where she volunteered more than 20 years ago before an injury forced her to give up her role on the inpatient unit. Instead, Marilyn would donate to the hospice, making her final in person donation of £500 shortly before she died.

Not content with this being her final chance to support local families facing life-limiting illnesses, Marilyn asked her husband Philip to donate in her memory.

When Philip paid us a visit to make the absolutely incredible £20,000 donation, made up to £25,000 with the power of Gift Aid, he explained, "She was exactly that kind of woman - very thoughtful. She'd be over the moon, knowing what a difference it will make. People outside don't see what it's all about, but there's more to it than people coming here to die, and Marilyn loved it volunteering here."

"She'll be looking down and thinking 'This is top this'."

We are blown away by the generosity shown by the couple, how fitting a gesture to remember Marilyn's lifetime of kindness 💜
