Itโs National Eye Health Week which is an annual event in the UK dedicated to promoting the importance of good eye health and regular eye tests. Bringing together opticians, health professionals, and the public to raise awareness about eye health, preventable sight loss, and the steps people can take to protect their vision.
We kick off with 5 Daily Habits to Protect Your Eyes ๐๏ธ
1. Wear UV-Protective Sunglasses ๐
Your eyes are just as vulnerable to UV rays as your skin. Prolonged sun exposure can increase the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Look for sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays not just tinted lenses. Itโs also recommended to wear them even on cloudy days!
2. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule ๐ป
Digital screens cause eye strain and fatigue. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. This simple habit reduces digital eye strain, prevents dry eyes, and helps your focus stay sharp throughout the day.
3. Get Regular Eye Exams ๐ฉโโ๏ธ
Many eye conditions develop silently without early symptoms. Regular check-ups with an optometrist or ophthalmologist can catch problems like glaucoma or early signs of vision decline before they become serious. Prevention is always better than cure. So even if it your eyes feel fine - it canโt hurt to get them checked!
4. Avoid Smoking ๐ญ
Smoking damages blood vessels and increases your risk of serious eye conditions, including macular degeneration and cataracts. Quitting smoking not only benefits your lungs and heart but also preserves your vision in the long run.
5. Eat Vision-Friendly Foods ๐ฅฆ๐๐ฅ
Your eyes need the right nutrients to stay healthy. Leafy greens (spinach, kale) are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, omega-3 fatty acids from oily fish support retina health, and vitamin A in carrots helps which have all been proven to help long term eye health and prevent eye disease.
