Hot weather can significantly alter blood sugar levels, increasing the risk of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. People with diabetes can stay safe in warm weather by staying hydrated, protecting their diabetes supplies from heat damage, and monitoring their blood sugar frequently. 😎

The diabetic eye screening timeline from booking to results:

1. Patients will receive a letter in the post when they are due a diabetic eye screening appointment with details of their upcoming appointment. Patients can also book or re-arrange appointments themselves by contacting our Bookings Team on 01204 891000, via email: enquiries.gmnorthdesp@nhs.net or by using the Patient Portal: https://portal.gmnorthdesp.co.uk

2. The patient attends their appointment (approximately 30 minutes in length), and digital images of the retinas are captured by a trained Screener after eye drops are applied. Please remember not to drive after the screening is completed and to arrange alternative transport if necessary.

3. The screening images are then graded by a team of trained professionals.

4. Results letters are then sent out in the post to patients, or patients can opt to go paper-free and download their results directly from the Patient Portal. The patient's GP will also be informed of the results. If any signs of retinopathy are found or if the images captured were not of sufficient quality due to e.g. other eye conditions, patients will be contacted with further information about any follow-up action required.

Meet the first Barbie with type 1 diabetes.

Barbie and Breakthrough T1D are proud to partner on the first-ever Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes, designed with inclusion and empathy at the core. πŸ’™β€‹

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) occurs when the body stops making its own insulin, which is why this Barbie wears a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) to track her blood sugar, and an insulin pump at her waist! The doll represents the incredible people living with T1D, and shows kids that a life with this condition is just as vibrant, fulfilling, and rich with possibilities.

Her blue polka dot style is a nod to the global symbols for diabetes awareness, and a reminder of the life-changing work being done by organizations like Breakthrough T1D, who are helping make everyday life with type 1 diabetes better.
