✈️ Flying after cataract surgery: what you need to know
At SpaMedica, we recommend waiting until after your post-operative appointment before booking a flight. Every patient heals at their own pace, so it’s important to follow your surgeon’s advice before travelling.
If you’re flying abroad, remember that emergency eye care may be harder to access and might not be covered by your travel insurance.
We’re proud to share that Lucy Struthers, one of our Healthcare Technicians at SpaMedica Leicester, has received a Cavell Star Award. This national award celebrates healthcare professionals who go above and beyond to deliver exceptional care to patients, their families or colleagues.
Lucy was nominated by a colleague for the kindness and reassurance she gives to every patient, helping them feel safe, comfortable and supported through their cataract journey.
Lucy said, “I feel so proud to have been nominated for this award. I love my job and being able to help our patients feel relaxed and comfortable before and after their surgery means so much to me.”
Congratulations, Lucy. Your passion for making patients feel at ease and improving their vision truly reflects what SpaMedica is all about.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our recent Summer Socials in Chelmsford, Portsmouth and Coventry.
It was a pleasure to connect with patients, families and local partners, and to share more about the work we do to deliver high quality eye care in each of these communities.
We were also delighted to welcome antiques expert and TV presenter Kate Bliss, who joined us at each event to offer free valuations and share fascinating stories behind some of the treasured items guests brought along.
We’re proud to be part of these communities and look forward to continuing to support patients with accessible, high quality care.

At 70 years old, Yuen Lambert is still leading from the front at SpaMedica – training over 400 nurses, mentoring colleagues and supporting optometrists across our hospitals.
Yuen ‘retired’ for just five days after a 45-year NHS career before returning to care. Her passion for ophthalmology and her belief in lifelong learning continue to inspire our teams every day.
“I want to share the knowledge I’ve gathered and pass it onto the next generation of nurses.”
Yuen’s story is a reminder that great care starts with great people. We’re proud to share her journey this Cataract Awareness Month.
We’re excited to announce that SpaMedica is bringing high quality NHS cataract care to Dorchester soon, making treatment more accessible for patients across Dorset.
Did you know that over 8,600 people in Dorset are currently waiting for ophthalmology treatment and less than 75% are treated within the national target of 18 weeks.
When SpaMedica Dorchester opens, patients will be able to access cataract surgery and YAG laser capsulotomy in just 4 to 8 weeks.
Located at Grove House on Millers Close, the new hospital will feature modern facilities, experienced clinical teams and free door-to-door transport with no mileage restrictions for those who need help getting to their appointments.
We can’t wait to welcome patients soon and help more people enjoy a clearer future.

Richard Quigley MP officially opened our new Community Diagnostic and Treatment Centre in Newport on 23 July.
Just under 30% of Isle of Wight residents are aged 65+, and with one in three of this age group expected to develop cataracts in later life, the CDTC is helping meet the growing demand for accessible care. Since February, it has already supported hundreds of NHS patients, making treatment easier and quicker to access.
Richard Quigley MP said, “It’s great that we have the community diagnostic and treatment centre here on the Isle of Wight. It means constituents can now have two out of their three appointments closer to home, and on the day of their surgery, SpaMedica offers a free patient transport service to collect patients from the ferry to their chosen SpaMedica hospital. This will have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of Islanders and it’s a good example of local healthcare supporting national priorities, such as the government’s vision for more accessible care. So, I’m really happy to have been invited to officially open the centre.”
We are proud to help more people across the Isle of Wight maintain their independence and enjoy a clearer future.
