While much of the focus is often on people, for many of us, the loss of a pet can be just as profound. Theyโ€™re part of our daily lives, our routines, our families โ€” and the silence around pet loss can sometimes make that grief feel even heavier.

From today, 1st May 2026, the new Rentersโ€™ Rights Act is changing things for pet owners across the UK โ€” and itโ€™s a big step forward.

For years, finding a rental property with a pet has been incredibly difficult. Tenants now have the legal right to request a pet, and landlords must consider that request fairly. Blanket โ€œno petsโ€ policies are being phased out, and landlords canโ€™t unreasonably refuse โ€” they need a valid reason.

Thereโ€™s also a clear process. Requests should be made in writing, and landlords usually have 28 days to respond.

Landlords can still say no in some situations, such as if the property isnโ€™t suitable, there are lease restrictions, or there are genuine concerns like allergies. The difference now is they have to justify that decision.

This change reflects something we see every day โ€” pets arenโ€™t just animals, theyโ€™re family. For many people, housing restrictions have meant delaying getting a pet, living apart from them, or even giving them up. This reform aims to make it easier for families to stay together.
