We finish our celebration of South Asian Heritage Month with Raz Mohammed, Divisional Operations Lead & Head of Communities.

“From the villages of Punjab to the green hills of Yorkshire – my family’s story is one of courage, sacrifice, and unshakable values.

In the early 1970s, my parents left the warm villages of Punjab for the crisp, rolling hills of Yorkshire. They were barely out of their teens, yet they made the life-altering decision to travel thousands of miles in search of opportunity. Back then, communities across South Asia were moving to the UK, answering the call for labour in the textile mills.

For my parents, it was a leap into the unknown. The sights, the weather, the language—everything was different. But they adapted quickly, working hard to create a better life for the family they would raise here. My father found steady work, while my mother, with unwavering patience, took on the greatest responsibility of all: raising a growing family.

There were nine of us children in total. Nine! Yet my father still made time for us outside of work, and for the community he loved so deeply. He was instrumental in setting up several places of worship in our town, leading fundraising efforts and inspiring others to get involved.

My parents’ commitment to education was relentless. Whether it was reading the Quran in Arabic, writing stories, or slogging through homework, they made sure we understood the value of learning. They passed on more than just academic discipline—they gave us languages, culture, and pride in our heritage. I speak two languages fluently, and it remains a core part of my identity.

Their sacrifices shaped us. Out of nine children, all earned university degrees. Two became doctors, one a lawyer, two CEOs, and others senior leaders or entrepreneurs in London, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and our hometown. The foundations of our success rest firmly on my parents’ values: spirituality, strong family ties, community service, and hard work.

Today, I carry that legacy forward. I’m a leader, a husband, a father of two young boys, and an active community member. My work allows me to influence strategy, how we grow as a company, how services are delivered, set high standards, and measure the difference we make. Across the country, my teams help transform lives!

One story stays with me. I was recently speaking at a to***co control alliance, sharing how many people we’ve supported to quit smoking. Among them was a 60-year-old woman who had smoked for 48 years. She had never been abroad—most of her money went on ci******es and supporting her family. After nine months of support from one of our advisors, she had saved enough to take her grandchild on their first ever holiday. She remains smoke-free to this day.

It’s moments like these that make it easy to get out of bed in the morning. Every journey I take across the country for work is a chance to live out my parents’ lesson: help others, and everything else will follow.”

As part of South Asian Heritage Month, we’re continuing our series spotlighting ABL colleagues and their reflections on this year’s theme: - how our heritage shapes the paths we take.

Today, we share the journey of Sumana Shivaprakash, Governance and Assurance Lead at ABL Health, whose story bridges cultures, values, and a passion for equity in healthcare.

“As someone from Kerala, South India, and a former registered practitioner, I’ve seen the stark realities of health inequalities firsthand. My journey into public health - through roles as a health promotion officer and analyst - was driven by a desire to make a meaningful difference. Before joining ABL Health, I researched the company thoroughly and was inspired by Denise Leslie’s mission to tackle health inequalities through community-based care. Now, as Governance and Assurance Lead, I’m proud to contribute to a team that values cultural acceptance, respects diverse backgrounds, and empowers me to proactively strengthen our systems for better health outcomes. ‘Roots to Routes’ reminds me that every step of my journey has led me to a place where purpose meets impact.

One tradition that deeply inspires my work is the South Indian value of ‘Seva’—selfless service. In Kerala, community care and collective responsibility are woven into everyday life, whether through temple volunteering, neighbourhood support, or family caregiving. This spirit of service motivates me to go beyond the expected in my role at ABL Health, ensuring our governance and assurance processes truly reflect care, integrity, and equity for the communities we serve.

I came to the UK to pursue my master’s in public health and, after some careful research, chose the Northeast—partly for the academic opportunities, and partly because I thought the cold weather might be a fun challenge! What I didn’t expect was how warm the people would be. From day one, I’ve felt a deep sense of cultural acceptance, both in the wider community and at ABL Health. My roots in Kerala, South India, are grounded in traditions like Onam, a festival that unites people across caste and religion in celebration. That same spirit of togetherness lives here too. As Governance and Assurance Lead, I bring those values into my work—ensuring our systems reflect care, equity, and inclusion. I speak five South Indian languages, plus English, and a bit of Norwegian and German, which helps me connect across cultures. SAHM is a time to honour our journeys, and I’m proud that mine led me to a place where diversity is embraced and every voice matters.”

Each year, South Asian Heritage Month celebrates and honours the history, culture, and contributions of people with heritage from South Asian countries.

As part of this year’s celebrations, we’re spotlighting the personal journeys of our ABL Health colleagues, reflecting on this year’s theme: hashtag .

Today, we spotlight Rashad Mehmood, Specialist Stop Smoking Practitioner for Your Health Oldham, whose inspiring journey spans continents, challenges, and generations.

“My story begins long before I was born. In 1948, during the war between Pakistan and India, my grandparents lived through unimaginable loss. Our home was destroyed in bombings, and we lost family members in the chaos. Those who survived had to leave everything behind and migrate to safer ground. They started again from nothing – no possessions, no stability, only hope and resilience.

I grew up hearing these heart-wrenching stories, feeling every sacrifice my grandparents and parents had made for our survival. They taught me strength, but there was no one to guide me on education or career choices. I learned to navigate life by myself, carrying a determination that came from generations before me.

I became the first in my family to graduate. That moment wasn’t just my achievement – it was the result of my ancestors’ courage and my parents’ quiet perseverance. Soon after, I stepped into leadership as a school principal, learning the value of responsibility and shaping futures. My journey took me further when I was selected as a Health, Safety, and Environmental Officer in an international company in the UAE, completing my projects successfully before deciding to pursue higher education in the UK.

Completing my Master’s in Public Health at the University of Northampton was a milestone that brought together all the struggles, lessons, and dreams of my past. Today, as a Specialist Stop Smoking Practitioner at ABL Health, I use my role to give back – supporting people to make positive changes, just as I had to make my own changes in life. My work allows me to bring my cultural traditions and values into practice, ensuring I connect deeply with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Being trilingual in Urdu, Punjabi, and English enables me to bridge communication gaps, making health advice more accessible and relatable for communities who may otherwise feel unheard. This cultural connection allows me to have a greater community impact – helping people feel seen, respected, and supported in their health journeys.

In my role, I not only help individuals quit smoking but also celebrate identity, heritage, and the shared values that unite us. My journey from a war-displaced family in Pakistan to working in public health in the UK is proof that the routes we take are built on the roots we honour. I carry my heritage not as a weight, but as a source of strength – a reminder that every step forward is a celebration of where we come from and the communities we serve.”

Alcohol Awareness Week: What’s Really in Your Glass?

Did you know alcohol can quietly sabotage your health goals?

➡️ A large glass of wine can have as many calories as a slice of cake.
➡️ Drinking can trigger cravings and make it harder to stick to healthy habits.
➡️ It can disrupt sleep, slow your metabolism, and hold you back from reaching your goals whether that’s losing weight or quitting smoking.

This Alcohol Awareness Week, take a moment to reflect on your drinking habits. Even small changes can make a big difference. Thinking of cutting down? We’re here to support your journey to better health whether you’re managing your weight, stopping smoking, or both.

As we mark Alcohol Awareness Week 2025 let’s talk honestly about how alcohol impacts our working lives.

Many of us feel the pressure of long hours high expectations and constant deadlines and turning to alcohol might seem like a way to relax. But what starts to unwind can gradually affect sleep concentration and emotional wellbeing.

These changes may not be obvious straight away but over time they can reduce productivity and increase stress. Instead of relying on a drink to cope try exploring healthier habits that leave you feeling clear headed and ready for the day ahead 🧘‍♂️📅🍷

It’s easy to underestimate how much that “one or two drinks” after work can affect us. Over time, even moderate drinking can interfere with how well we sleep, how focused we feel the next day, and how we manage stress or communicate with others at work.

During Alcohol Awareness Week 2025, we’re highlighting how alcohol and work are more connected than many people realise. Whether you’re an employee, manager or business owner, it’s important to reflect on how drinking habits both inside and outside working hours, might be impacting workplace wellbeing and performance.

By raising awareness and talking more openly, we can support healthier choices, reduce stigma, and promote balance and wellbeing across every kind of workplace. 🍷💼🧠

Rachel's health journey began when chronic joint and back pain led her to see a rheumatologist. The advice was clear - she needed to lose weight. But it was a visit to her GP that truly changed things. He told her she was just one point away from being diabetic. Shocked, she was referred to ABL Health and decided it was time to take control.

Mobility was a daily struggle, and her weight was making it worse. Although she'd become less active over the years, her eating habits remained the same
- large portions, frequent snacking, and too many carbohydrates. Her short-term goal was to stay out of the diabetic range. Long-term, she aimed to lose one pound a week - 52 pounds in a year. She did even better, losing 23 kilos (over 50 pounds), and turning her health around.

The key to her success was following the easy plate method. She focused on vegetables, protein, and smaller portions of carbs. She stopped snacking at odd hours and became far more mindful about her food choices. The changes made a big difference - she could move more easily, felt less breathless, and her clothes became loose. She dropped from a size 26 to a size 18.

One evening, while out for a meal, a friend didn't recognise her. "Rachel! Is that you? You're disappearing!" That moment showed just how far she'd come.

Her message to others thinking about joining the programme? "You've got nothing to lose, but so much to gain. Give it a go - it can change your life. You just have to believe."
