In TCM, late July marks the transition into the fifth season, late summer, which is associated with the Earth element and the Spleen and Stomach organ system. This period is characterised by a focus on grounding, nourishment and digestion, as the yang energy of summer begins to shift towards the yin energy of autumn ๐Ÿ‚

Spleen & Stomach - these organs are central to digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall energy production

Colour - yellow, symbolising the abundance and warmth of the season

Taste - sweet, representing the nourishing and grounding quality of the Earth element

Emotion - worry and pensiveness, as the Spleen is also responsible for processing thoughts and emotions

๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒฟ A pen, a page, and a calmer mind ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒฟ

A simple page. A quiet pause. A slower breath

When your thoughts feel tangled or your mind wonโ€™t settle, try picking up a pen.

Writing by hand does more than organise your day - it soothes your nervous system and brings you back to yourself.

In Chinese Medicine, writing helps anchor the Shen - your spirit and mind - so you feel centred, stead, and more at ease ๐ŸŒฟ

Just a few minutes of writing per day can ;

โœ๏ธ Ease emotional tension and mental overload
โœ๏ธ Sharpen memory and clarity
โœ๏ธ Strengthen fine motor skills and coordination
โœ๏ธ Lower cortisol and support immunity
โœ๏ธ Maintain brain health by keeping language pathways strong
โœ๏ธ Activates areas tied to learning, creativity and decision making

Handwriting stimulates Brocaโ€™s area - the bains language centre - and the reticular activating system, which boost focus, memory and calm ๐Ÿ˜Œ

You donโ€™t need a perfect notebook or a peaceful hour, just five minutes with a pen and paper can shift your mood and focus ๐Ÿ˜Š

Try one line a day - a thought, a feeling, a win, or a worry. A few scribbles before bed to help your mind unwind. Doodles if the works donโ€™t come or a small notebook in your bag for through on the go ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

From journals and gratitude lists to dream logs and unseen letters, every page gives your thoughts a place to rest - and your mind a moment to breathe

Acupuncture For Fibroids

Fibroids are the most common structural abnormality of the uterus and estimates are that between 20% to 50% of women aged between 35 to 50 have them. Fibroids may form in the endometrium of the uterus or protrude into the uterine cavity. They may be completely asymptomatic, but they may cause pelvic pain, pressure, constipation, recurrent bladder infections or bleeding between periods (metrorrhagia) or excessive bleeding during the period (menorrhagia). Fibroids and polyps can also interfere with fertility and conception as they can have the same effect as an intrauterine device in interfering with the development of the endometrial lining, thus making embryo implantation difficult. In addition, when fibroids and polyps are very large, they can interfere with the front and back walls of the uterus pressing together to help an embryo implant. When fibroids grow outside of the uterus, they can get in the way as the fallopian tube tries to pick up an egg after ovulation. Fibroids may also cause difficulties during pregnancy if they push against blood vessels.

Chinese Medicine views fibroids as stagnation of blood which is not moving freely as it should, and which accumulates in places it shouldnโ€™t causing stagnation. Acupuncture is used to move blood,
Qi and to alleviate damp and phlegm, to help resolve stagnation, increase circulation in the area to resolve fibroid masses. In so going, acupuncture can be effective in clearing fibroid growths.

Acupuncture, as a complementary therapy for uterine fibroids, can help manage symptoms like heavy menstrual bleeding, abdominal pain, lower back pain and potentially reduce fibroid size.

Once you find the spot, you can massage it with gentle to moderate pressure in small circular motions for several minutes. Acupressure can work quite quickly so you should feel some relieve in the first few minutes. If you are massaging LI4 for a migraine or acute sinus pain, you will likely need to repeat this massage throughout the day if the pain returns. This is also a great point to stimulate to help ease and regulate bowel movements, and can be incorporated as part of your daily routine

โ›”๏ธ Again, please do not stimulate this point if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant. Always tell your acupuncturist is you are or think you might be pregnant โ›”๏ธ

If you suffer from migraines, you may have see the first photograph on the internet of a cloths leg being placed on a person hand to help relieve the pain. If youโ€™ve used this method and it works for you then Iโ€™m really pleased for you. Would I recommend it? Maybe not necessarily, this may cause you pain or even miss the point you are trying to stimulate. An easier and more targeted way would be to use your thumb and first finger to stimulate the point and get some relief, as shown on the second imagine ๐Ÿ™‚

If youโ€™ve received acupuncture, chances are you have already experienced Large Intestine 4 (LI4), at some point. At Ashi Therapies we use LI4, also translated as Union Valley, because itโ€™s extremely effective for relieving pain, headaches, regulating elimination, and clearing out symptoms in the head and the intestines. Letโ€™s talk more about how the magic of this point and how you can use it to support your mind, body and spirit to allow change and let go of things no longer meant for your system

Body : This point is excellent for supporting the body with pain anywhere, especially the face, headaches, and neck (sinuses, toothaches, earaches, jaw tension ect). Additionally, itโ€™s also a great aid in detoxification, ie constipation, diarrhoea, food poisoning and even hangovers!

โ›”๏ธ A note of caution, although LI4 can be a great way to help with cramping during menstruations, this powerful point is not to be used on pregnant bodies โ›”๏ธ

Mind/Spirit : One of the brilliant things about this point is that it supports elimination by nourishing our resources so that we are able to let go with more ease. When we are full of anxiety, distress, and confusion, this point can clear out the system and revitalise the Qi with fresh clear energy and bring our thoughts back to the understanding of the heart.

A note of using this point for acupressure

You can find LI4 by locating the fleshy depression just beyond the meeting point where our thumb and first finger bones meet, in the โ€œVโ€ shape. This point is usually a little achy - especially if it needs some love - which can help us know when youโ€™ve found just the right spot.

๐ŸฅŠ๐ŸฅŠAcupuncture V To***co ๐ŸฅŠ๐ŸฅŠ

Giving up smoking

There are many steps to quit smoking (ie cutting down, ni****ne patch, cold turkey, e-cigarettes ect), so why do 10 million Brits still struggle to quit smoking? If you are one of the 70% of smokers who wants wants to quit, consider the effects acupuncture could have to help uou in your journey to stop this addictive , dangerous and - letโ€™s face it - expensive habit fit good.

The World Health Organisation has agreed that Acupuncture has a therapeutic effect on dependence to to***co.

Western medicine focuses on the effects of to***co on the lungs while Chinese medicine considers it to deplete Kidney-Jing and Liver-Qi as well. in Chinese Medicine, smoking weakens the Lungs function of commanding the overall movement of Qi along the meridians (the channels through which Qi circulates). This is caused by the accumulation of heat in the lungs and stomach, which in turn causes fire in the Heart and/or stagnation of Liver Qi. Hence withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, palpitations, mood swings and restlessness occur.

According to TCM, acupuncture is used to ;

โœ”๏ธ Stimulate detoxification
โœ”๏ธ Promote a heightened sense of relaxation
โœ”๏ธ Encourage endorphin production in order to overcome addiction
โœ”๏ธ Help the body cope with stress, improve circulation and promote mental wellbeing

The length of treatment depends on each person response and on the severity and duration of the addiction. So no one size fits all but each and every session will make you feel better and stronger.

Ear acupuncture is also used during treatment to help with the addictive nature of to***co and to decrease the urge to smoke. After your treatment we will place ear seeds onto specific points on the outer ear in order for you to stimulate these points between appointments, to help maintain the effects of the acupuncture treatment. This helps you to control withdrawal symptoms and cravings as they occur.

In the past, clients have often reported a dislike for the smell of to***co after treatment, and found stimulating the ear points to be a good way of helping to control the urge to have a cigarette.

๐ŸŽˆ๐ŸŽˆBloating isnโ€™t just food itโ€™s flow ๐ŸŽˆ๐ŸŽˆ

If your tongue has a central line, cracks or a thick white coating your digestion may be needing some help.

Bloating, gas, heaviness after eating isnโ€™t always about the food you eat, it can sometimes be about how well your digestive system is working. When your gut is depleted, it can need a helping hand ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

Do you have signs of depletion?

โฌ‡๏ธ A tired, heavy feeling after meals
โฌ‡๏ธ Feeling tired and heavy after meals
โฌ‡๏ธ Feeling bloated, even after healthy meals
โฌ‡๏ธ Having a tongue which has central cracks and a thick coating.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), bloating is often linked to imbalances within the digestive system, particularly involving the Spleen and Stomach meridians. We can identify several patterns associated with bloating, including Spleen Qi deficiency, Liver-Stomach disharmony, dampness and food stagnation. Treatment we would recommend includes acupuncture and anmo fu (abdominal masaage).

Until you can make your appointment, here are some hints and tips to help:

๐Ÿ™Œ Chew your food, airing for at least 20-30 chews per bite

๐Ÿ™Œ Establishment regular meal times to promote digestive health

๐Ÿ™Œ Practive mindful eating by consuming food and beverages slowly. Refrain from eating while studying, scrolling social media, or working during meal times.

๐Ÿ™Œ Be aware of any food intolerances you may have. keep a good diary to monitor and identify any foods that contribute to bloating.

๐Ÿ™Œ Drink warm water. Avoid drinking cold drinks and eating spicy, cold or raw food.

๐Ÿ™Œ Exercise regularly. Engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least twice a weeks. This helps to improve the Qi and circulation of the body and intestine movement.

Hives/Urticaria & Traditional Chinese Medicine

Hives/urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a kind of skin rash notable for pale, red, itchy bumps caused by allergic reactions to internal and external agents. This skin condition is characterised by wheals (reddish swellings) or itching that occurs almost daily for more than six weeks.

It comes and goes on various parts of the body and can be triggered by an allergic reaction to food, prescription drugs, infections or stress.

According to TCM, the condition can arise when;

โœด๏ธ the lungs ๐Ÿซ, intestine, stomach, liver and kidneys are deficient. The skin is a reflection of the lungs ๐Ÿซ. If your lungs are not working well, your skin becomes unhealthy, itchy and dry.

โœด๏ธ a lack of Qi (vital energy), blood and Yin (the element which cools organs), poor blood circulation or blood status.

โœด๏ธ pathogenic factors, such as wind, heat, cold and dampness invade. Wind and heat can also trigger angry and res hives, resulting in map-like patches that have a burning sensation or, if youโ€™re like me, throw in a bit of sunshine to bring out your Solar Urticaria (caused by sun exposure). Note to self, get needling and boosting your Liver and Lung energy Michelle!

So what can we do to help?

๐ŸŽฏ Book in for some acupuncture!!

๐ŸŽฏ Try to avoid temperature changes, wind, heat and cold - especially in quick succession

๐ŸŽฏ Try to reduce stress levels and improve blood circulation by doing light exercise such as a brisk walk or yoga. If less mobile, do some light chair exercises to get your blood and Qi to circulate.

๐ŸŽฏ Abstain from alcohol and avoid spicy ingredients.

๐ŸŽฏ Sleep early and have enough rest so that your body can produce more Qi and blood to nourish your skin.

Are you ready for this weekends hot weather? ๐Ÿฅต

To cool down in hot weather, according to TCM, focus on consuming cooling foods, staying hydrated, and moderating physical activity. TCM categorises foods by their energetic temperature (cool, neutral, warm, hit) and recomends incorporating cooling foods like watermelon, cucumber and mint to counteract the heat. Drinking plenty of water, especially at room temperature or slightly cool, is crucial, and avoid excessive iced or carbonated beverages is advised.

Cooling foods
Watermelon, cucumber, cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, pears, oranges, apples, lettuce, spinach, celery, green tea

Stay hydrated
Carry water and sip it throughout the day, avoid excessive iced or carbonated drinks as these can impair digestion. Consider coconut water - itโ€™s a natural electrolyte drink, which is helpful for preventing dehydration

Most importantly enjoy the good weather because good weather days can be far and few
