In order to lead a physically active life, children need to master a variety of different life skills. As a point of reference, research has consistently found that 8-9 year old children who could read well were four times more likely to graduate when compared to peers with poor reading skills. Similarly, failing to develop motor skills in early life can negatively affect one's lifelong development. For example, a child with low competence in a range of movement skills is less likely to remain physically active going into adolescence/adulthood. The early years are therefore critical for learning skills and as youth strength and conditioning coaches we should capatilise on the adaptability of the central nervous system to adapt to motor skill training during this time period👆

During the back squat exercise the barbell should ideally track over the mid foot when viewed from the side. This puts the lifter in the best position to produce maximal force whilst remaining stable. As seen above, the barbell stays over the mid foot for the most part but does slip in front at times. Have someone film your squats to look at the path of the bar🎥😁

Not every training session is smooth sailing and though sometimes it can't be avoided, it can be identified better through appropriate monitoring/observation🤓

While many subjective questionnaires are available for assessing mood state and general well-being prior to training, the process of evaluating youth athletes should begin from the moment they arrive. Observing what a young athlete is demonstrating helps to identify if they are enthusiastic, energetic and alert or instead, lethargic confused and demotivated. Quite often, visual observation and an informal conversation can provide insight into an athletes state of mind, especially if there is a good working relationship. Simple questions (i.e., How are you feeling today? Are you ready to train?) will often prompt a discussion about an athletes readiness to train; if the response is negative then a more objective follow-up may be required🖥️
