Class lists for the SW Spring Show are up!

I’m sponsoring the in-hand RoR this year and will be (hopefully) heading over to watch my oldest client, 30, in the veteran class. He won last year and got my treatment voucher as his prize which he used, and is now a regular.

However, after this win and doing well at ESUK, he was not placed at the village show due to his unruly behaviour 😬 the judge commented on his excellent mobility for his age but said he could not win as he so disruptive πŸ˜‚πŸ«£

I had a word yesterday but he was quite disruptive in his treatment so I don’t think he heard πŸ˜‚

I’ll pop a pic of him up, he is adorable!

Interesting read, there’s an abstract, showing that prolonged use of massage pads is beneficial for the ridden horse. Although I think any horse would benefit not just the ridden

Thrilled to have my MSc Thesis published, amongst other authors - up to date research and evidence is the basis of physiotherapy practice and I hope to continue contributing to keep animals receiving the most evidence based management.

For any horse owners or equine practitioners with massage pads to use in the stable or at competitions - this one's for you!

Love this! Explains it all beautifully β™₯️ this would have been Cordy’s year, she was a fire horse!

🐎 π–πžπ₯𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐑𝐞 β€œπ˜πžπšπ« 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐑𝐞 π‡π¨π«π¬πžβ€

I feel like this one deserves a repost as today is officially the start of the Chinese Lunar New Year. This means we can legitimately begin to celebrate the β€˜Year of the Fire Horse’!

So while many of us posted on the new year according to the Gregorian calendar, which is January 1, the Lunar New Year, associated with the Chinese zodiac, follows the second new moon after the winter solstice. Which means this year it officially begins on February 17, 2026.

The 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac closely follows the orbit of Jupiter, which takes just under twelve years to complete a full revolution around the sun. Ancient Chinese astronomers tracked this β€œYear Star” to mark long stretches of time, creating a calendar system that was predictable, observable, and practical. Associating each year with an animal made this system accessible across social classes and literacy levels - bringing astronomy, agriculture, and storytelling into everyday life.

The animals of the zodiac were chosen because of their roles in human society. Later tradition describes a race called by the Jade Emperor that determined which animals were included and their order. The animal are used in the Chinese zodiac in this order with the following traits associated with them:

πŸ€ π‘πšπ - Survival and adaptability. Thrived alongside human settlements, symbolizing intelligence and the ability to navigate scarcity and change.
πŸ‚ 𝐎𝐱 - Labor and reliability. Powered agriculture, representing endurance, consistency, and collective stability.
πŸ… π“π’π πžπ« - Power and protection. A symbol of courage, authority, and defense.
πŸ‡ π‘πšπ›π›π’π - Caution and sensitivity. Represented awareness, timing, and restraint.
πŸ‰ πƒπ«πšπ π¨π§ - Authority and natural forces. In Chinese tradition, symbolized balance, rain, and imperial power.
🐍 π’π§πšπ€πž - Strategy and wisdom. Associated with patience, observation, and deliberate action.
🐎 π‡π¨π«π¬πž - Momentum, independence, and the freedom to pursue purposeful work. Enabled trade, warfare, communication, and expansion.
🐐 π†π¨πšπ (π’π‘πžπžπ©) - Harmony and cooperation. Linked to social balance and shared responsibility.
πŸ’ 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐀𝐞𝐲 - Innovation and problem-solving. Represented adaptability in complex systems.
πŸ“ π‘π¨π¨π¬ππžπ« - Order and vigilance. A marker of routine, responsibility, and timekeeping.
πŸ• 𝐃𝐨𝐠 - Loyalty and protection. Reflected trust, companionship, and social bonds.
πŸ– 𝐏𝐒𝐠 - Sustenance and completion. Symbolized nourishment, abundance, and the close of a cycle.

In addition to the cycle of animals, there is also a corresponding system of elements: metal, water, wood, fire, and earth.. In the Chinese zodiac, each element lasts for two consecutive years and can be identified by the final digit of the year.

πŸͺ¨ 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐚π₯: years ending in 0 and 1
Represents structure, discipline, and refinement. Metal years tend to emphasize focus, resilience, boundaries, and determination.

πŸ’§ π–πšππžπ«: years ending in 2 and 3
Reflects rest, introspection, and adaptability. Water years emphasize intuition, emotional depth, wisdom, and strategic movement rather than force.

πŸͺΎ 𝐖𝐨𝐨𝐝: years ending in 4 and 5
Marks growth and beginnings. Wood years are linked to creativity, expansion, flexibility, and forward momentum - often times of new ideas and development.

πŸ”₯ π…π’π«πž: years ending in 6 and 7
Symbolizes peak energy and transformation. Fire years are associated with passion, visibility, bold action, and rapid change.

🌎 π„πšπ«ππ‘: years ending in 8 and 9
Acts as a stabilizing phase between elements, associated with grounding, balance, and transition. In the zodiac, Earth years emphasize practicality, reliability, and steady progress.

This cycle of elements intersects with the 12 zodiac signs, creating specific element–animal combinations in a 60-year cycle.

Traditionally, the Year of the Horse is associated with action, direction, and forward motion. Combined with fire, this year really emphasizes initiative and transformation. This theme makes it a perfect moment to ask yourself: where do you want momentum in your life? That might mean pursuing a professional goal, returning to work that feels meaningful, or finally moving toward something you are passionate about. Whatever that looks like for you, I hope 2026 brings purposeful movement and progress worth carrying forward!

However, beyond shaping the themes of the year ahead, each animal–element combination is also believed to reflect the traits of those born that year.

How has your year been going so far and what goals do you have for the year of the fire horse?

This is the very pretty Dolly who said β€œYes, to the bit” last week! 😍

Dolly chose an Expert Bits Comfy Barrel mouthpiece on a hanging cheek πŸ’œ

She was in a Vetawan lozenge eggbutt, which is quite a thick bit compared to the barrel, couple that with her small mouth and it wasn’t leaving her much room for manoeuvre in there.

Dolly rode head high and wouldn’t work into the contact. She was foaming at the mouth and chomping on the bit. After a while she would sn**ch her head down and then start leaning on the bit.

The hanging cheek suspends the bit in her mouth, offering her tongue and bar relief and removing her responsibility for constantly placing the bit. Add the easy roller action so Dolly could move her tongue back to swallow and the thinner mouthpiece to give her more room, Dolly was able to drop into the contact, and stopped foaming and chomping at the bit πŸ™Œ

Downside, she will get tired quicker as this has dramatically altered her way of moving but, upside, this will help unlock her top line through her back and hind, which was consistently tight during her bodywork sessions from that high head position not allowing her spine to flex.

Before and after photo shows, top, the upward carriage in Dolly’s old bit and, bottom, a more level carriage in the new bit.

There is a lot more I could say on the topic of head carriage but, for the moment, let’s focus on Dolly and wish her all the best in her new bit!

Drop me a DM if you want to give your horse a chance to have a say and say β€œYes to the bit!”
