BIRTH STORY 🫶🏻💙👶🏼

My birth story - Baby Oscar

What an amazing birth I had this time round with baby number 2. I was booked to be induced on Thursday 6th November (41+4) but baby boy had other ideas. After an internal examination on the Saturday before (no sweep) to check what my cercix was doing & see how favourable I was. I then saw my midwife again on Wednesday 5th & agreed to have a sweep at around 11am (I was already 3cm’s & my waters were ready to go/be broken), by 1:30pm I was having contractions at home. They ramped up pretty quick (every 7/9 mins) so got my hubby back home from work, prepped my bags & called the hospital. They were fantastic over the phone & told me to stay home, have a bath & labor at home as long as possible. I did all that & even did sparklers (bonfire night) with my toddler, hubby & my mum whilst having contractions.

At around 7pm I was really uncomfortable, contractions were coming quite quickly so called the hospital again & arranged to go in. We got to Pilgrim at about 7:45pm where the contractions were really intense & I couldn’t speak! I was taken to my room & introduced to my lovely midwife. I had also called Jagoda (my student midwife who was on call) on my way to Pilgrim & she arrived soon after us which was lovely to have a friendly face. I just wanted to be on the floor for whatever reason so I did a downward facing dog to get baby away from the cervix with the intense pain & when I sat back up my waters broke on their own!

I then got given a crash mat & peanut ball because my body was just telling me to be on floor, laid on my left side & right leg up so I went with it. I had solely gas & air & my TENS machine for pain relief the whole time (hubby controlling that because I couldn’t cope with the contractions & pressing the button).

After a lot of contractions I had this sudden urge from top to bottom to push so I told the midwives that I could feel his head (not sure they believed I was ready) but when they looked, his head was coming. Every contraction came & most of them I felt the urge to push so pushed & then at 10:05pm he was born. I had delayed cord cutting & lots of skin to skin. After hubby cut the cord, I was moved back to the bed & Oscar latched straight away, continued skin to skin & my breastfeeding journey started. I struggled with my first baby & didn’t breastfeed (only expressed) so this meant to the world to me this time. I stayed on the labor ward until the early hours of the morning on Thursday & then I was transferred to the maternity ward. Myself & Oscar had all our checks & then we were discharged at about 1pm.

I also had Jagoda who was a student midwife with me the whole time & after seeing her at 11am I don’t think she expected me to call her that evening. Jagoda was amazing, so helpful and calm the whole time. Oscar was her 39th birth out of 40 births she needed for her case study.

I’ll be forever grateful for Pilgrim hospital for helping to bring both our beautiful boys into the world.

💜 Patient Feedback 💜

Hi, I just wanted to send a message and thank the midwife’s involved with my care! So many to remember all the names after multiple trips but my delivery midwife’s will always have a special place in my heart now - just another day at work for them but Emma Cody & Student midwife Lauren were incredible! My little boy was born on the 21st October and after a long induction but short labour. Emma has delivered both my babies now, 5 years apart and I will never forget them with no way of really showing appreciation! Thank you so much to all of them involved!🩵
