Tooth Decay – Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention
What is Tooth Decay?
Tooth decay is the gradual damage of a tooth caused by acids produced by bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria feed on sugars from food and drinks and produce acid that attacks the tooth surface.
In the early stages, decay affects the outer layer of the tooth (enamel). If left untreated, it can progress deeper and form a cavity (hole) in the tooth.
How Does Tooth Decay Start?
Tooth decay can develop due to:
• Frequent consumption of sugary foods and drinks
• Inadequate brushing and oral hygiene
• Bacteria converting sugar into acid
• Acid weakening the tooth enamel over time
Early decay may appear as white or brown marks on the tooth and is often painless. Without treatment, this damage can progress.
What Increases the Risk of Tooth Decay?
• Regular intake of sugary snacks or drinks
• Brushing less than twice a day
• Not cleaning between teeth
• Dry mouth
• Smoking or use of smokeless to***co
• Irregular dental check-ups
Signs and Symptoms to Look Out For
• White or brown discolouration on teeth
• Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
• Intermittent toothache
• Visible holes or pits in teeth
• Persistent bad breath
• Swelling or discharge around a tooth (urgent dental advice required)
If you notice any of these symptoms, please contact the practice promptly.
What Happens If Tooth Decay Is Left Untreated?
• Increasing pain and discomfort
• Risk of infection and tooth loss
• More complex and costly treatment may be required
Early treatment is usually simpler and more effective.
Can Tooth Decay Be Reversed?
Early decay:
Improved oral hygiene, fluoride toothpaste, and reducing sugar intake may help stop or reverse early damage.
Advanced decay:
Once a cavity forms, dental treatment such as a filling is required. In severe cases, root canal treatment or extraction may be necessary.
