This month in Action for Happiness the theme is Mindful March and it is all about helping us to live more fully in the present moment - rather than losing ourselves in regrets about the past or worries about the future. Mindfulness is so much more than a healthy living trend, it is a skill that takes hard work, but has the power to magnify the effects of all that is good on life. It means we can really be there for ourselves and others.

I personally love to use the free Insight Timer App to find guided meditations, but being mindful doesn't even need the use of an App. It can be done by simply pausing, taking a breath, bringing your awareness to your body and your surroundings.

As usual the Action for Happiness Calendar is packed with 31 very doable simple actions that will help you build your Mindful Muscle.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.

- Leonard Cohen, “Anthem”

It reminds me of Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery, such as bowls, by mending cracks with lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Instead of hiding damage, this technique highlights the repairs and values the flaws and imperfections of life and objects.

We are all perfectly imperfect. You. Me. Everyone. Lets celebrate and embrace our flaws, our imperfections, the essence of what it is to be human.

If you are struggling to celebrate or accept those flaws and imperfections Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy can be a really gentle way to begin reconnecting with and accepting the remarkable living organism that is your body.

Slow is the quickest way

How does that land with you? Confused? How can that be so? Don't we have to push on, do more and get healed NOW?

The more I do this Craniosacral work the more I realise this is the kindest and most effective way to deal with long term, chronic issues. It doesn't need to be pain, but maybe a life time or decades of anxiety, depression, skin condions, auto immune conditions, episodes of back issues where nothing you do, or no medical intervention seems to help.

Go slowly my friend. Pause, take a breath. Be with what is. Focus on the process not the outcome.

And slowly but surely, your body, your nervous system can learn to feel safe again.

Biodynamic Craniosacral therapy will hold that space for you to slow down. To pause. To begin to reset and return to balance. To find out more please get in contact. I offer a free no obligation 15 minute phone call to explore how BCST might help you slowly but surely find ease once again.

Caesarean scar tissue research – can you help?

Have you had a C-section delivery within the last year?
Would you like to contribute to some research about living with a C-Section scar by completing a short (15 min) questionaire?

So often it is forgotten that C-Section is surgery is major abdominal surgery and research like this revealing the impact of life post C-Section will help improve care and support post surgery in the future.

I know, sometimes I ask weird questions during a Craniosacral session, such as

Can you get a sense of your outline? What does it look or feel like?
How is your little toe doing today?
Can you find, even a tiny part of your body that feels ok, or more ok than the rest of your body?
What are you noticing in your body right now?

So if I ask weird questions then please know that I am very used to getting what seems like weird answers back. And in fact I love to get weird answers back. The weirder the better!

And even if I haven't asked a weird question and you notice something weird in your body, or a sensation or thought that seems so bizarre or silly don't hold back in sharing it with me. Together we can explore the weird.

Just as the light in me sees the light in you, the weird in me sees the weird in you

With love for the weirdness of life and being human

What are you actually doing?

That’s a question I get asked a lot. In the western world we have an expectation of therapy as being something that is done to us, especially hands on therapy. In Biodynamic Craniosacral therapy (BCST) we are not doing or manipulating anything, we are simply listening and allowing through the medium of safe relational touch. It is the art of Non-Doing, witnessing and honouring the deep wisdom that is inside all of our bodies, the ancient cellular intelligence that has always known how to heal, how to restore, how to find balance.

By placing my hands on various parts of your body I am listening deeply, holding space for your body to begin to settle and move towards health and greater wellbeing. It is an act of co-regulation, providing a calm grounded presence for your nervous system to regulate to and get attuned to. We all need a grounded calm presence to regulate to which is why I have regular Craniosacral therapy sessions myself to be able to offer that grounded presence to you.

If this gentle but profound therapeutic approach appeals to you please get in touch for a free 15 min no obligation call to discover how a Biodynamic approach may help you find ease.

I'm often asked by clients for advice on how they can help themselves between sessions.

There are many ways in which you can show yourself some self care and one way I'm finding particularly useful at the moment for myself is making a daily habit of a loving kindness meditation.

I find the easiest way is through the Insight App. Its free (there is a premium paid version but the free one is totally adequate for getting started) and there are hundreds if not thousands of free guided meditations, visualisations, breathwork sessions and more ranging from 5 mins to over an hour that you can simply select and play. If you don't like the voice or the music or the style of it just find another. Personal favourites of mine are Sarah Blondin and Jenny Haynes

You can listen in the morning or just before bed or at any point in the day, listen on the bus, whilst the kettle is boiling, lying in your bed, sitting somewhere, it really doesn't matter, it's the act of doing it that makes the difference. And it also keeps a record of what you've listened to and when so there's a daily incentive to keep the streak going. For those of us who require or are motivated by a record of our commitment, ermm, yeah like me ;-)

Even just five minutes a day of finding some stillness, grounding, whispering some loving kind affirmations to ourselves can help solidify the benefits of investing in Craniosacral Therapy.

What is Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) and how can it help me?

BCST is a gentle light touch fully clothed therapy in which I make light contact and listen into your body and its systems, particularly your nervous system. It’s like a joint meditation and by tuning into your nervous system it helps to find balance, to return to rest and digest, and when our bodies are in this state, called the parasympathetic nervous system, they can begin to heal, reorganise and return to health. Clients often experience a sense of wellbeing, lightness and clarity following a session.

It is particularly good for conditions that may be related in some way to stress and or trauma, whether that be physical or emotional/mental conditions. In my clinic I have helped clients find ease with migraines, multiple sclerosis, endometriosis, anxiety and stress, depression, insomnia, IBS, tinnitus, back problems, grief, chronic pain and joint issues amongst other things.

Clients who have regular sessions say they begin to see the benefits spill out into their everyday lives. Able to be more present, find moments of stillness and feeling more connected to their body. What’s not to like about that?!

If you’d like to find out more please get in touch via text or email or message me on here. I'm based in Amber Hill between Boston and Sleaford

Welcome to Action for Happiness Friendly February!

This month’s theme is Relating (connecting with people). Let’s take action to strengthen our relationships and build connections in our local community.

Feeling positively connected to other people is at the heart of happiness. Whether these relationships are with partners, families, friends, work colleagues, neighbours or others in our social networks, they can all contribute to our wellbeing, health and resilience. There are many ways we can take action to build, maintain and deepen our relationships and connect with the communities around us.

Here are three great ways to build connections this month:

* Take regular action in line with our Friendly February calendar shared here.
* Get inspired by our expert talks, such as Deep Listening with Emily Kasriel or Mindset and Relationships with David Robson. There are 100's of free talks in the Talk Library on the AFH website https://actionforhappiness.org/deep-listening-emily-kasriel
* Join a local group session to learn new evidence-based relating tips and encourage and support each other in community. You can find your nearest group online on the AFH website

Whoo hoo its the last Monday in January!

For a month that can feel for many like it goes on for an eternity, its time to celebrate that it's nearing an end. What else to celebrate at this time of year?

The slow but sure lengthening of the days
First snowdrops
Bulbs poking their heads up out the soil
Buds beginning to form on the trees and shrubs
Hares racing around like it is March
Spring is just around the corner
The Year of the Snake with all its shedding is also drawing near its end.
We are alive

So much to be grateful for

Many of the people I work with are in chronic long term pain or discomfort.

This interesting blog from Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) course director, Steve Haines, talks about creativity being key when it comes to managing pain.

He says "Finding new creative responses to the danger signal, rather than going down fixed, hard-wired responses is vital. That could look like; moving differently, understanding differently, feeling differently, or describing yourself differently".

Both light touch ScarWork and BCST can be great ways to start exploring different responses, giving potential and opportunity for things to be different. If you've been stuck in your discomfort and pain and haven't considered trying either ScarWork or BCST then maybe now is the time to start exploring new ways.

Appointments available in my clinic at Amber Hill, between Boston and Sleaford. Please get in touch for more information and an informal chat about how either one or both of these therapies may help you.

"Don't ask what the world needs.
Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive"

(Attributed to Howard Thurman)

What makes YOU come alive?
How can you do more of this?

Craniosacral therapy, by reconnecting with oneself, is one way which might help you rediscover what makes you come alive, what stokes the fire in your belly, what fills you with joy.

However you discover it, just do it. Come alive. Live life fully and completely
