So last night I was out with friends and I decided to walk home as I hadn’t had much exercise during the day.
One of the occupational hazards of being a therapist is that I sit on my backside for most of the working day, so I like to walk when I can to try to redress the balance somewhat.
As I set off on my 25 minute walk, the sky was still quite light, but very quickly it became dark and I found myself hurrying to get home, even breaking into a jog for a few minutes, racing against my growing discomfort in the darkness, my vulnerability of being alone and awareness of the late hour.
When I finally turned the key and opened the door to my flat I felt instantly relieved, comforted by the warmth and familiarity of my surroundings and appreciative of the safety and peace of my tranquil home.
It felt so good to be home.
Meditation can be thought of as being a way of coming home to ourselves and closing the door on the outside world for a short while.
When we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our lives, thinking about what we are supposed to be doing next or what we did yesterday, getting stressed because we have too much to do, feeling disappointed and frustrated because we can never accomplish or meet our own expectations, living life at such a fast pace that it passes in a blur...joyless and unfulfilling... it’s because our attention is externalised, outside of ourselves.
Our fascination with the outside world and our everyday striving creates stress and keeps us separated from our internal home and our true selves.
I suppose you could say we are all homesick and perhaps all we have to do to feel better is to go home occasionally.
Take time today to come home to your heart. Simply stop what you’re doing and take a few moments to breathe and bring your attention in from the outside world of thoughts, actions and reactions to the peace and comfort of just being.
You and your breath, surrounded in the healing love of your own heart.
Welcome home ✨✨✨🙏🏻❤️
