Today, we remember Patrick Steptoe, whose pioneering work helped transform the field of fertility treatment.

Together with Robert Edwards and Jean Purdy, he played a key role in the development of IVF, leading to the birth of the world’s first IVF baby, Louise Brown, in 1978. Their groundbreaking work has since helped millions of families around the world.

Patrick Steptoe passed away on 21 March 1988 and is buried at St Mary’s Church, Bourn, resting peacefully next to his wife Sheena Steptoe. This serene location is just a stone’s throw from Bourn Hall Clinic, where he and his colleagues made history.

Today, we honour his legacy and the lasting impact he made on reproductive medicine and the lives of countless families.

Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate love, strength, and the incredible journey of motherhood, in all its forms. 💛

At Bourn Hall, we know that for many, this day can bring a mix of emotions, joy for some, longing and reflection for others. We want to take a moment to honour every experience: to the mothers holding their children close, to those still waiting and hoping, to those who have faced loss, and to those supporting loved ones through their fertility journey.

Motherhood begins long before a baby is born; it starts with love, courage, and the unwavering hope to nurture and care. Every story is unique, and every path deserves recognition and compassion. 🌷

Today, we celebrate all of you. You are seen, you are supported, and you are never alone. 💕

Have you ever wondered what matters more, an embryo’s grade or whether it’s genetically normal?💛

Both give important information, but they tell us different things. Understanding this can help you feel more confident and connected to your fertility journey.
