What an incredibly successful "GIVING BACK DAY" we have had. The sun shone and we welcomed our community in to our beautiful gardens here at The Cedars.
It all started with our motivating and enthusiastic super team leader Sarah-Jayne Knight. Sarah-Jayne has cared for her community for over 42 years and when asked where this inspirational idea came from she openly said, "Care is all I have known, it's what I do, from when my mum bought me a Ladybird book on Florence Nightingale and I told her that's who I want to be... it was just a childhood dream. My health is now not in a good place and before I retire I wanted to stretch out to the community in these hard times and give something back."
To our amazing Mayor, Councillor Colin Pattison and his wife consort Fiona, we can not thank you enough, you gave your time so freely, speaking and getting to know our residents, and your support to this community venture was immeasurable.
Councillor Pattison said, "When you speak of unsung heroes, Sarah-Jayne is the epitome of this - giving back with love and care, a dedicated lady who has led her life selflessly caring for others."
Also, a thank you to the whole team here at The Cedars for your help and support enabling our residents to all take part and be involved - with a BIG special mention to Paula Finch, our brilliant Relatives Ambassador, who is always ready to lend a hand.

It was lovely to join all our Barchester sister homes on the big screen in the Garden Lounge for a virtual BIG BINGO BONANZA, and so lovely to have such a full room to join in the fun! There was additional element of excitement as the prize, for our home winners, is to take the them to our favourite local tearoom, The Ginger Fox. Well done to Anne Miller for "the line" and to Don Comar for the "FullHouse"!
We really did have a giggle 😃

Swines Meadow Farm Nursery was a step back in time! Filled with curios from antique iron Victorian cow byres and stalls to vintage telephones and weighted sack lifts; we travelled through continents with plants from Asia, America, new Zealand and Africa; it was a treasure to visit! Don and Vera had a lovely time exploring the overgrown jungle like paths in the wild garden, admiring the incredible age of the olive tree (168 years!) and sampling the delicious cakes made with home grown fruit. "We've had a lovely time!".

We had a lovely morning - making sure Dorothy had everything she needed and was sitting ready for the taxi to take her to a family member's wedding today...I think we can all agree she looked a million dollars, with nails, fascinator and a smile to match!!
The smile was contagious as Anne bagged the Prize Bingo win with a tin of Quality Street, which she so kindly shared a round. As we played we sipped Summer Pimms with fruit and lemonade, just another lovely afternoon 😋

We had a special treat today as we explored the gardens at Springfields Festival Gardens; and stumbled across some ferrits, meercats and ducks! We loved meeting these interesting animals up close. Jean and Doreen then visited The Parlour Restaurant for tea and cake; and an impromptu live piano performance from a visiting music teacher. Doreen said "this is so lovely, thank you so much!'', and Jean said "you don't know what it means to be able to go out again! It's been wonderful".

21/08/2025

We enjoyed a day of memories and music with a day celebrating the 1940’s, including a live musical performance from the wonderful Alison Jay, who performed a selection of nostalgic hits from the decade, including ‘Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree’, ‘There’ll be Bluebirds Over The White Clliffs of Dover’ and some wonderful Glenn Miller tunes.

Residents joined in with the singing, and tears were shed as she performed her final songs ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ and There’ll Always Be An England’. However, the event wasn’t over then, as it was also Sima’s birthday- so we enjoyed singing Happy Birthday before sharing a slice of delicious cake.

Residents also had a chance to walk down memory lane as activity team members provided a selection of vintage items from the 1940’s to inspire conversation; including a ball gown, gloves, handbag, coins and books. Megan said ‘my mum used to wear these- it’s so lovely to see them again!’. Staff joined in with the occasion, dressing in 1940’s costumes including seamed tights, which provoked laughter as residents remembered drawing the seams on bare legs with pencil!

Becky said, “Our residents and guests had a wonderful day singing along with the wonderful performers and sharing our memories of this very special time. We do our best to provide a wide range of activities and entertainment at The Cedars Care Home as part of the lifestyle enrichment programme for residents, and musical events are always very popular!”

🍎📚 The Kirkburn Classroom 🍏🎨

The team at Kirkburn Court Care Home in , Scotland, recently launched a new initiative called ‘The Kirkburn Classroom’.

The first session was led by Ina, a resident at the home, who took on the task of teaching everyone how to crochet.

Ina admitted she hadn’t done any crocheting for quite a while and warned she might be a bit rusty – but as soon as she picked up the hook and wool, she was off to a flying start!

She showed great patience helping everyone get started and all involved commented on how much they enjoyed the experience.

The team was pleased to report that almost everyone behaved well in class – with just a little bit of mischief.

What a fantastic afternoon. 👏

Stay tuned to find out who’ll be hosting the next class.

It was a truly special day for Greta, Joan and Beryl, residents at Hilton Park Care Home in , Cambridge, as they had the remarkable opportunity to meet King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Greta, Joan and Beryl had the privilege of meeting the royals and were lucky enough to exchange a few words with the King.

It’s never too late for a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

🎉 Bruce Turns 100 in True Highland Style at Seaview House 🎉

There was no quiet tea party for Bruce’s 100th birthday – the much-loved Navy veteran had other plans. From kilts and Highland dancers to fish and chips, live music and a showstopping cake, Bruce celebrated his milestone in style, surrounded by fellow residents, friends and family.

Bruce proudly wore full Highland attire, complete with the striking Highland Pride tartan, custom-made by Chisholms Highland Dress.

The day featured a piper parade, traditional dancing, a heartfelt ballad performed by a fellow resident and even some brilliant spoon playing.

The celebration ended on a royal note – with a birthday card from King Charles himself and a surprise invitation to the royal tent at the Mey Games.

Bruce’s verdict on the day?

“Yes…now I’ve started making a list for next year.”

Here’s to Bruce – Happy 100th Birthday! 👏

A big thank you to all involved in making this day such a success.

Everyone truly enjoyed the visit, they petted and fed Alpasta who seemed to appreciate meeting his new friends.
