Anne Richards 100th Birthday Celebration - Day 2

For those who couldn’t make Mum’s actual birthday on 18th July 2025, we booked an afternoon tea the following day. The Westbourne Tower team put together an amazing range of food, complete with a beautiful 100th birthday cake (something that no-one in the family had seen before and something very special for the great grandchildren). Anne’s grandchildren came down from Leicester together with their husbands and children. They all know Anne well from the time she lived in the Midlands and over the years have valued her love, wisdom and chocolate bars. Anne received gifts and cards from everyone including items made especially for her by the Great Grandchildren.

The Westbourne team helped blow out the candles and it is clear that she is well settled here.

All in all a great day with Mum her old self, chatting away throughout the afternoon.

Thanks to all at Westbourne Tower who put this together, particularly Christina who made the cake and Steve who looked after us during the event.

Happy Birthday Anne, Mum, Grandma and Great Grandma

Kind regards

Mike and Carol Richards

Residents from Westbourne Tower today enjoyed Peter Kovacs last talk, today on Hungary, his country of birth. Peter discussed the country’s History, traditions, and fun facts about such an amazing place, along with Tokaji, their world famous dessert wine. It was such a detailed presentation we had to split it before and after supper!
Thank you, Peter, for putting together such a detailed presentation. We will miss you.

Centenary Salute: WWII WREN Veteran Ann Richards Turns 100
Westbourne, July 18, 2025 — Surrounded by family, friends, and fond memories, Ann Richards — a proud veteran of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRENS) during World War II — celebrates her 100th birthday today.
Born in 1925, Ann played a vital role in wartime communications at HMS Inskip, the Royal Navy Air Station (RNAS) near Preston, Lancashire. It was there that she joined the Royal Navy communication teams in supporting critical operations focused on defending the North West approaches to the UK. As a member of the communication teams, Ann helped relay vital information to both RNAS command and London HQ — a key link in the Royal Navy's intelligence network.
Ann fondly recalls the friendships forged during those years and her passion for writing letters. A prolific pen pal, she kept in touch with countless service members in both the UK and the USA during and after the war, offering encouragement and camaraderie across borders.
While the war demanded focus and discipline, Ann found time to enjoy life, particularly her love of dancing. She often joined friends at social events on the base and made frequent trips to Blackpool, dancing until 10:30 p.m. before catching the last bus back to camp.
Ann’s service was inspired by her father, a Royal Navy veteran of the First World War who earned three medals for his service aboard several naval vessels. Following in his footsteps, Ann’s own wartime journey would lead her to love.
She met her future husband, Petty Officer Colin Frederick Eric Richards — an Avionics Engineer based at RNAS St Merryn (HMS Vulture) in Cornwall — during a local dance at Inskip. The two began a long-distance romance that spanned hundreds of miles and relied on trains, bicycles, and handwritten letters. They married in 1948, Ann relocated to Leicester, where they bought their first house and raised two sons, both born in the 1950s.
After taking time to raise her family, Ann returned to work in Further Education. Tragically, Colin passed away in 1987, but Ann stayed active and surrounded herself with family, friends, and purpose.
At 99, she moved to Westbourne Tower Care Home, where she has since found a new circle of friends and continues to receive regular visits from her sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
As part of her milestone celebration, Ann was honoured with a surprise visit from the Royal Navy Station Poole, thanking her for her service and dedication. She also received a personal letter of congratulations from His Majesty King Charles III.
Ann Richards exemplifies the resilience, commitment, and spirit of a generation that helped shape the world we live in today. From war service to love stories and community life, hers is a century well lived — and celebrated.

Residents from all floors at Westbourne Tower, enjoyed a visit from Cari Soul Band, the vibes were amazing and the residents and families were up dancing. Such a treat, a live Reggae band, they are such a great group of people, who travel down from London each year, to entertain our community. Music that speaks to the soul.

Vive La France!
This month we decided to visit France. In July France celebrates ‘Bastille Day’ which is celebrated annually on 14th July and marks the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, a major event of the French Revolution. A huge thank you to our culinary team yesterday for wonderful French themed menu and treats throughout the day. Peter Kovac also gave a great talk on France, talking about its history, facts and interesting topics, thanks Peter!
Today, we have had an amazing French theme photoshoot, we started the day with activities which included the can-can and some ballet moves, then we had our photoshoot afternoon for all floors, what fun we had! Tomorrow we finish off with a themed quiz to test our knowledge, trivia and special edition Avery Daily.
