Employee of the Month: Desmond!

Thank you for all you do for our young people!

Here’s what Desmond had to say about his role with

What do you do at ICS?
I always arrive early to ensure smooth handovers and show respect to both our young people and my colleagues. My role focuses on delivering holistic, person-centred care, supporting young people in line with their care plans and advocating for their needs. I’m proactive in finding solutions, maintaining high standards in recording and communication, and always working collaboratively with management and the wider team.

What’s the best part of your job?
I love carrying out dynamic risk assessments to ensure each young person receives the right level of support. But honestly, my favourite moments are taking them out into the community and seeing them enjoy new experiences.

What motivates you?
The supportive, democratic culture at ICS really inspires me. Management are approachable, responsive, and genuinely care about staff wellbeing, from accommodation support to access to counselling and advice services. I also appreciate that ICS recognises and rewards our work fairly (and maybe this Carer of the Month should campaign for a pay rise! 😄).

What advice would you give to someone wanting to work in care?
Care isn’t just a job, it’s a calling. You need compassion, commitment, and courage to truly make a difference. If your heart’s in it, you’ll finish every shift knowing you’ve done something meaningful.

Thank you Desmond 🙏🏼

The Window of Tolerance

Children who’ve experienced trauma often find it hard to stay in that calm, “safe” space where they can learn, connect, and regulate their emotions.

When they feel overwhelmed, they might go into hyperarousal (fight/flight, shouting, aggression, running away) or hypoarousal (freeze, shutting down, going silent, withdrawing).

Our role as carers isn’t to “fix” behaviours but to gently help widen their window of tolerance. Every calm response, every moment of connection, every time we show safety over shame, we help them build resilience and stay regulated for longer.

This is how real healing happens.

What you see is not the whole story…

Behaviour is communication. A child who seems angry, withdrawn, or disruptive may actually be coping with trauma. Our carers approach children with compassion, not judgment. Could you do the same?

The smallest act, a smile, patience, help with a shoe lace, or reading a story can become life changing memories for children in care.

Our carers don’t just ‘look after children’ they help break generational trauma, provide dignity, encourage hope and make memories.

03/09/2025

Our team regularly comes together for group training sessions — sharing knowledge, building confidence, and growing stronger as a team. Every discussion, every question, and every new skill helps us provide the best possible care to the children and families we support 🙌🏼

26/08/2025

Before any of our carers begin working with the children and families we support they take part in one of our induction training day. This is a short but powerful session designed to:

1. Welcome new team members into the ICS family and get to know you
2. Share our values and person-centred approach
3. Provide essential knowledge and practical skills to feel confident from day one

We know that a positive start leads to positive care — and that’s why we make sure our team are supported, prepared, and ready to make a difference.

Our next training day is in two weeks, if you’d like to be involved in this and start working with us please find our application form in our bio links. Or send us a message.

Because we know that when carers feel equipped and valued, the children we support thrive.

Happy Monday Morning! ☀️

Kicking off the week with 3 Evidence-Based Steps to De-escalate a Child, steps we hope we don't need to use but once in a while they crop up, and it's always good to know what works when it does:

1 Stay Calm & Regulate Yourself.
Children mirror the emotional state of the adult in front of them. Use a steady tone, slow breathing, and a relaxed posture. If you can stay regulated, you're modelling the calm they need to reach.

2 Create Psychological & Physical Safety.
Reduce stimulation by lowering noise, stepping back to give personal space, and removing any immediate stressors. Safety cues-like gentle facial expressions and non-threatening body language-help signal they are not in danger.

3 Validate & Acknowledge Feelings.
Rather than rushing to problem-solve, reflect back what you see and hear ("I can see you're really frustrated right now"). This validation helps the child feel understood, lowering their physiological stress response and making them more receptive to support.

Have a great day everyone 🙌🏼
