"One conscious breath in and out is a meditation" Eckhart Tolle
Sometimes we don't have a lot of time to dedicate to a formal meditation practice, but taking just one conscious in and out breath, when you remember to throughout the day can make a difference. It's a gradual, accumulative process.

A very simple and beautiful meditation we can teach children, is to imagine they are smelling a beautiful scented flower on the in breath, and then blowing bubbles or on dandelion seeds on the out breath. You can always practice this with a flower and some bubbles first to get them used to the feeling, and then in future they can use their imagination to call upon this technique whenever they need to. This could be supportive in the return to school, or at any point throughout the day. Emily xxπŸ’œπŸ™

Transitional objects for the return to school, πŸ«πŸŽ’ to bring comfort and reassurance. πŸ’ŽπŸ§Έ
For many, it's almost time for the start of a new school year. While this can be exciting, it can bring up fear and anxiety for some children, as they anticipate a new teacher, class or even school. After a long summer with family and friends, returning back to the structure and routine of school can be an adjustment phase. Something as simple as having a little security, comfort or transitional object can help bring a feeling of safety, comfort and security during times of change or temporary separation from a caregiver. It can help children manage feelings of worry or anxiety and allows them a way to self-soothe and self-regulate. If the object is associated with a caregiver, or general positive feelings of security, it can help support emotionally towards moving to greater independence.
Here are some suggestions: a photo πŸ–ΌοΈ a special toy 🧸 a little pebble, shell 🐚 or crystal πŸ’Ža blanket, a scented object that helps the child to relax which has positive associations 🌹 An item belonging to their caregivers, that smells of them 🧣The main thing is that the object has happy and positive associations for the child. Letting your child choose a special item for this purpose could be a lovely activity to do in preparation for the new term. The most important thing is to let the children choose the item themselves - it may not be the thing you would expect! Depending on the object, it could then be kept in their school bag, or drawer and whenever they need a little touchstone to safety and love, they can access it. 🩷
It could be a little ritual each day - of packing it the night before or morning of school, and then removing it each evening. Each child and family will find a way that feels good for them.
I'd love to hear of any transitional objects that you or your children use. 🩷 For me, it's definitely crystals, pebbles and special jewellery. πŸ’ŽπŸ“Ώ Wishing everyone a smooth transition back to school πŸŽ’ in September. Emily. πŸ™πŸΌπŸ’•xx

About me

Hi, this is Emily and I run Serene Kids in Bournemouth, Dorset. I am a Professionally Accredited Children's Meditation Teacher*. I offer bespoke Meditation, Mindfulness and Wellbeing Sessions For Children, Teens And Their Families. Planting Seeds For A Happier, Healthier, More Peaceful Life.

Having been introduced to meditation myself as a child, I have a lifelong practice which has been an invaluable gift. Serene Kids was developed in order to offer the same gifts to all children

After leaving behind my life in London over a decade ago for a more peaceful way of life by the sea, I have been practising a more simple and mindful way of living. Taking part in retreats, attending teachings and even time spent teaching monks English has helped deepen and strengthen my own practice. This inspired me to share some of this experience with others, particularly children. Children are so open and receptive to learning meditation and mindfulness techniques and they don't seem to have the resistance and mental blocks that we as adults sometimes have. Helping children to develop a practice, gives them invaluable inner resources, in order to live a happier and healthier life.
