Happy spring or autumn equinox, depending on where you are. It is a beautiful time of transition now, as we celebrate rebirth and renewed energy. Light now overtakes the darkness. For me, it truly symbolizes the 'real new year', and I feel an awakening as I shed off winter's deep season of introspection and withdrawal. It's time to let go of any stagnation and plant seeds, both literally and metaphorically for our future goals and the growth we'd like to see.

As we are at a point where day and night are nearly equal, it can be a time to focus on our inner harmony. A chance to balance our inner world and our outer actions. πŸŒ‘πŸŒ’πŸŒ“πŸŒ”πŸŒ• βš–οΈβ™Ž

Due to some recent injuries, I have personally found myself in a time of rest and reflection. It has been a chance to stop and take stock of where I currently am and where I would like to breathe new energy, as we move into spring. It has felt challenging at times, feeling an almost enforced sense of stopping by external conditions and circumstances. Yet it has allowed me to sit with it all and to listen deeply to what I've needed to hear and feel what I've needed to feel.

My own meditation and mindfulness practice has definitely helped me in accepting my present reality and situation and has helped me find positives and hope. Just as the season is transitioning, I too feel a part of that process both internally and externally. 🌱

This time of year unfolds as a gradual awakening. There is a time of deep rest before everything bursts into life. It is sometimes described as: " breath before initiation". Just as winter acts to conserve energy, so too does the early spring phase. We have an invitation to take our time now, slowly unfurling, to gather our strength before the intense season of spring fully begins, both within and without.

Sometimes, we must SLOW DOWN TO WAKE UP!

Wherever we are on this planet, may we all benefit from this pause point and come ever more into balance βš–οΈ. May all beings be happy and free. πŸ’œπŸ•‰οΈπŸ•ŠοΈπŸ™πŸΌ Emily xx

Can you feel it? Spring 🌼 🌱 is in the air. It is imminent and even though winter still lingers on, spring is already at work, gently breathing new life, energy and growth all around us. Potential feels tangible in the air.

Meditation and bringing awareness to our breathing can deeply connect us to the cycles of life, within and without. Each breath can be experienced as a mini cycle of life and death.

Breathing, that essential rhythmic physiological process, mirrors natural rhythms, such as the ocean tides or the changing seasons. The inhalation brings us fresh energy, which can be likened to the growth and potential of spring. Our exhalation is a release and letting go.

This beautiful, normally mostly unconscious process of breath that flows in and out can be seen as a microcosm of the birth, life, death and rebirth cycles that are part of the much broader universal experience.

When we practice being fully present with this cycle, and share the practice with children, it can awaken a profound sense of awareness and an acceptance of change and the constant cycles of life. It can give us all a deeper sense of trust in our own day- to- day life experiences. We can trust that although change and loss is inevitable, there always comes a shift back to birth, growth and renewal.

It can support us in moving through our days with less fear and reactivity, instilling an invaluable feeling of connection to the cycles and rhythms that are in us and surround us.

Happy Winter Solstice 2025 - Here in the UK, we've reached the shortest day & longest night. Time feels as if it is standing still, holding its breath. A short pause before the pendulum starts to swing the other way. Nature is resting in her sacred pause, at this deepest darkest part of winter. In a few days, on around the 25th the sun will be reborn, making its journey back up to a high point in our sky.

During this time, we are all invited to enter this space of stopping and resting. To be held by the stillness that can be felt and accessed now. Below is part of a post I wrote in 2019, inspired by this point of the year.

Stillness πŸ•ΈπŸ•ŠπŸŒŸ

Sometimes, we all need some stillness. To switch of, to turn off.
To go deeper within. To listen and to hear what is happening here and now. To stop running, stop seeking, stop grasping. To just allow – space - to enter.
To be. To breathe.
Sometimes, simply to breathe is enough. To put down the heavy bags we have been carrying, to let go of the to-do-lists – the should do lists, the have to lists. Release it all.

It happens in different ways. In nature or sitting with a cup of tea; when swimming, running, riding, creating, music, or just sitting still. Breathing. However it happens – it is so necessary. To stop us getting sick; burning out or losing hope. To stop us losing our ability to be there for ourselves, so that ultimately we can be there for others.

Stillness.

This time of year, where things begin to grow hectic, fast and busy; these moments are there waiting to be uncovered..discovered and felt.

When we are able to put down those bags – physically and metaphorically, we return to the stillness within. 🀍🌟✨🀍 Emily xx

"One conscious breath in and out is a meditation" Eckhart Tolle
Sometimes we don't have a lot of time to dedicate to a formal meditation practice, but taking just one conscious in and out breath, when you remember to throughout the day can make a difference. It's a gradual, accumulative process.

A very simple and beautiful meditation we can teach children, is to imagine they are smelling a beautiful scented flower on the in breath, and then blowing bubbles or on dandelion seeds on the out breath. You can always practice this with a flower and some bubbles first to get them used to the feeling, and then in future they can use their imagination to call upon this technique whenever they need to. This could be supportive in the return to school, or at any point throughout the day. Emily xxπŸ’œπŸ™

Transitional objects for the return to school, πŸ«πŸŽ’ to bring comfort and reassurance. πŸ’ŽπŸ§Έ
For many, it's almost time for the start of a new school year. While this can be exciting, it can bring up fear and anxiety for some children, as they anticipate a new teacher, class or even school. After a long summer with family and friends, returning back to the structure and routine of school can be an adjustment phase. Something as simple as having a little security, comfort or transitional object can help bring a feeling of safety, comfort and security during times of change or temporary separation from a caregiver. It can help children manage feelings of worry or anxiety and allows them a way to self-soothe and self-regulate. If the object is associated with a caregiver, or general positive feelings of security, it can help support emotionally towards moving to greater independence.
Here are some suggestions: a photo πŸ–ΌοΈ a special toy 🧸 a little pebble, shell 🐚 or crystal πŸ’Ža blanket, a scented object that helps the child to relax which has positive associations 🌹 An item belonging to their caregivers, that smells of them 🧣The main thing is that the object has happy and positive associations for the child. Letting your child choose a special item for this purpose could be a lovely activity to do in preparation for the new term. The most important thing is to let the children choose the item themselves - it may not be the thing you would expect! Depending on the object, it could then be kept in their school bag, or drawer and whenever they need a little touchstone to safety and love, they can access it. 🩷
It could be a little ritual each day - of packing it the night before or morning of school, and then removing it each evening. Each child and family will find a way that feels good for them.
I'd love to hear of any transitional objects that you or your children use. 🩷 For me, it's definitely crystals, pebbles and special jewellery. πŸ’ŽπŸ“Ώ Wishing everyone a smooth transition back to school πŸŽ’ in September. Emily. πŸ™πŸΌπŸ’•xx

Beautiful πŸ€©πŸ§šβ€β™€οΈπŸ’œπŸ’œ

Let nature remind you to breathe, not just with your lungs, but with your whole being. Let the wind teach you how to let go, the trees how to stand still, and the rivers how to keep moving forward. In the rustle of leaves, in the hush of the dawn, in the quiet patience of the earth, there is a steady rhythm calling you back to yourself. Inhale the calm, exhale the chaos. Let each breath be a conversation with the sky, the soil, and the soul. Let the world outside soften the storm within.

Serene Kids

About me

Hi, this is Emily and I run Serene Kids in Bournemouth, Dorset. I am a Professionally Accredited Children's Meditation Teacher*. I offer bespoke Meditation, Mindfulness and Wellbeing Sessions For Children, Teens And Their Families. Planting Seeds For A Happier, Healthier, More Peaceful Life.

Having been introduced to meditation myself as a child, I have a lifelong practice which has been an invaluable gift. Serene Kids was developed in order to offer the same gifts to all children

After leaving behind my life in London over a decade ago for a more peaceful way of life by the sea, I have been practising a more simple and mindful way of living. Taking part in retreats, attending teachings and even time spent teaching monks English has helped deepen and strengthen my own practice. This inspired me to share some of this experience with others, particularly children. Children are so open and receptive to learning meditation and mindfulness techniques and they don't seem to have the resistance and mental blocks that we as adults sometimes have. Helping children to develop a practice, gives them invaluable inner resources, in order to live a happier and healthier life.
