A day of making medicines and harvesting plants.

These beautiful vibrant flowers are calendula officinalis or marigold.

After collection of the darkest orange flowers, they were left to dry in drying racks.

Calendula can be used for a few things, as most herbs!

It has various actions, assisting the immune system, being anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-spasmodic, anti-histamine, anti-haemorrhage and antibacterial.

It is used internally and externally and makes a wonderful antimicrobial, healing cream.

(Always consult a herbalist before trying new herbs, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication).

Hawthorn Berries are abundant at the moment! I love seeing plants change through the seasons.

Hawthorn berries and flowers are used a lot in my practice. It is known as a cardioprotective and a cardiac tonic. It helps to lower blood pressure, is antiarrhythmic and its actions lack the toxic effects of digitalis.

So I use it in prescriptions for several heart and cardiovascular conditions alongside other indicated herbs.

Always check with a medical herbalist or medical professional before taking any herbs, especially if you are on medication, pregnant or breastfeeding.

What a fantastic day. It was a scorcher, but a beautiful setting and lots of lovely people and stalls. It was a great opportunity to talk to people about what we do and for me talking about herbal medicine.

Clivers or Galium aparine, you may know it as sticky w**d

This plant is everywhere at the moment!

Used for enlarged lymph nodes, kidney stones, chronic skin disorders like psoriasis, acne eczema and rosacea or as a diuretic.

It can be taken as a tea, a juice from the fresh plant or a tincture.

Out for a little walk and I stumbled across this beaut of a plant. They are so tall, I struggled to get it all in the picture!

This plant is mullein. Verbascum Thapsus is the particular type of mullein I use in my practice.

It has a soothing and relaxing action for irritable respiratory conditions and is therefore used for asthma, coughs and emphysema.

I also read once that the young leaves can be used for toilet paper!

Have you seen one of these forcing their way through the concrete in your driveway?

Oregano (Origanum vulgare)

Besides being used in some lovely food recipes, it has its medicinal uses too.

Oregano stimulates the stomach to aid digestion, it helps to clear catarrh from the lungs and is good for coughs, colds and flu. It is an antiseptic mouth wash and gargle and its an antiviral.

It has also been used for helping menstrual flow and tension headaches.

I saw this little gem whilst walking through the wild flower meadow at the Kingfisher Barn Visitor Centre.

Comfrey!

Symphytum officinale is used medicinally, externally for bruising, ulcers, wounds, inflamed skin, damage to muscles, tendonitis and fractures.

Comfrey can be made into a poultice, liniment, cream or a wash.

The reason comfrey works so well is because it is a rapid healer for tissues and bones and its acceleration of mitosis (cell division) contributes to this rapid healing effect.

Have you ever tried comfrey?
