What is “Dry Weight” in Kidney Failure?

If you’re on dialysis, you’ve probably heard the term dry weight—but what does it actually mean?

Dry weight is your body’s weight without extra fluid—basically, your ideal weight right after dialysis.

Why it matters:
• Too much fluid removed? You might feel dizzy, muscle cramps, nausea and have low blood pressure.
• Too little removed? could lead to straining the heart, swelling, high blood pressure, or shortness of breath.

It’s not a one-time number. Your dialysis team adjusts it based on:
• How you feel after dialysis
• Blood pressure trends
• Signs of fluid buildup
• Sometimes even special equipment

Finding the right dry weight = better treatment + better quality of life.

“So if you find that you can go under your dry weight without symptoms, then this means your dry weight needs to be adjusted.”
