This afternoon a small group of our residents enjoyed some baking, the recipe…
Apple Crumb Cake. We set up a production line with one being tasked with peeling and chopping apples, another making the cake mixture and others working together to create the crumb element of the cake. It will be enjoyed with warm custard as dessert tomorrow 🍏

Following on from MHA’s OSCAR’s awards this week Handsworth have hosted their own ‘Glitz & Giggles’ awards afternoon, and what an afternoon it was. It was amazing to see so many of our residents come together to celebrate each other. The whole afternoon was enjoyed by everyone, we had awards such as ‘The most active award’, ‘the potty mouth award’ and ‘the always dancing award’ which were all voted for by staff and residents. There were also 2 special recognition awards, one ‘the legacy of strength ’ was given to our oldest resident Denis who never asks for anything from anyone and our other special award ‘the always smiling award’ was given to our lovely respite resident Julie who is a breath of fresh air when she is with us at Handsworth.
Well done to all our winners and thank you to everyone who took part in the afternoon 🏆

We have recently chosen a tree in our garden to be our remembrance tree dedicated to residents that have sadly passed. On friday our Chaplain Andrew was asked to lead a small remembrance service, where residents were encouraged to attend, before adding our first leaf to the tree.

There was no better way to spend a miserable and wet friday afternoon than with a performance from Singer Craig. With over 25 years of experience and roles in West End shows, he spent this afternoon singing a range of songs from the musicals along with more popular songs which got residents and staff singing and dancing along to. With one of our residents challenging Craig to sing with out his microphone, he kindly obliged and blew everyone away with a rendition of ‘Love Changes Everything’ bringing a tear to everyones eye.

This afternoon saw us celebrating the burial of our time capsule. The idea came from one of our residents while he was watching the garden be resurfaced. We have added lots of different things such as pictures and personal notes along with paper clippings and coins. Local Member of Parliament Connor Rand took the time to visit the home and deliver a speach before doing the honours of burying the capsule. We hope in years to come when this is dug up that the site will still be a MHA home dedicated to care and upholding all of MHA’s values.

We have had a fun morning playing beetle drive. Its amazing how much fun and laughter can be created with such a simple game. There was competitiveness, laughter and shouts of cheating but ultimately bringing residents together and reminiscing about playing the game with their families.

This week we have carried out activities based on traditions from the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. I spent some time chatting with relatives of one of our residents who told me about the different traditions of Rosh Hashanah and what different items represented. We made a spiced honey drizzle cake to start off the week. Honey is used to represent the sweetness of the start of a new year. Followed by making mosaic mirrors, with mirrors representing reflection on actions from the previous year and what they would like to change for the new year. We enjoyed talking about the different traditions during our activities which a lot of residents found interesting.
