‘I’m really happy with my results. Hopefully this can help other kids like me.’ Nine-year-old Alfie has become the first person in the UK to have a new type of leg-lengthening surgery at Alder Hey. Alfie was born with fibular hemimelia that meant his right leg grew shorter than his left, affecting his balance and putting strain on his hips and back. Traditional procedures to help with this have used lengthening rods inside the bone canal, and could only be performed on adults. This new technique works by attaching a nail to the surface of the bone, which gradually pulls the two bone ends apart, allowing the body to grow new bone in between. It also means less pain, a lower risk of infection, and a faster recovery. The day after his operation Alfie was already up and walking with a frame! His mum Laura said: ‘This procedure will be life-changing for Alfie. Every member of staff showed us outstanding support and kindness - the care exceptional.’ Incredible work team! We wish Alfie all the best for the future! 💙
