Day 21 – 🎄✨

Our Infection Prevention and Control are sharing some important reminders during the festive season.

❄️ Hand Hygiene remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of transmission of infection.
❄️ Respiratory hygiene - follow ‘catch it, bin it, kill it'.
❄️ Remain vigilant for respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms (D&V) and know what actions to take if you or your family have symptoms.
❄️ Eating healthily and staying hydrated helps prevent infections.
❄️ Keep areas well ventilated, while keeping warm and safe.
❄️ Please don’t visit relatives in hospital if you're feeling unwell or have flu-like symptoms, a heavy cold, diarrhoea and/or vomiting – make sure you’re free from symptoms for at least 48 hours before visiting.
❄️ Vaccination for those who are eligible.

Christmas can be a difficult time for some people, especially if you’re choosing to stay sober or trying to cut back from problem drinking.

If alcohol feels hard this season, you’re not alone, and it’s okay to do what feels right for you.

Some tips from our lived experience substance misuse workers that may help take the pressure off:

🔹Plan ahead for social events and decide what feels manageable
🔹Know your triggers and be kind to yourself around stress or anxiety
🔹Bring or choose drinks you enjoy that don’t include alcohol
🔹Share your plans with trusted friends or family if it feels helpful
🔹Remember you don’t have to attend every event – and it’s okay to leave when you’re ready
🔹Focus on the positives, like clearer mornings, saving money, and finding joy in other things

Stay connected with your support network or groups, in person or online, over the festive period.

If you need extra support this Christmas, help is available:
• FRANK – talktofrank.com or 0300 123 6600
• Alcoholics Anonymous – 0800 917 7650 or help@aamail.org
• SMART Recovery UK – smartrecovery.org.uk
• Samaritans – 116 123

Op COURAGE run recovery groups to help military veterans overcome addictions such as problem drinking, alongside mental ill-health. More information at opcouragesoutheast.nhs.uk.

Day 20 – 🎄✨

We want to say a huge thank you to all our incredible volunteers who have given their time, energy, and care across Berkshire Healthcare this year. 💚

From our Listening Team and Pet Therapy Team, to the Social Visiting Team, Gardening Team, and many more, you all make a real difference to the lives of patients, families, and our wider community.

This year has been full of inspiring moments:

🌸 Our Rainbow Garden won Gold at the Newbury in Bloom competition, offering a calming space for patients and their loved ones. This wouldn’t be possible without our volunteer gardeners who care for it every week.
🎨 We were thrilled to welcome the Wates team back for another fantastic day, sanding, painting, and refreshing garden furniture to brighten our spaces.
🌹Scott kindly donated Pooh and Piglet sculptures to the Rainbow Garden in memory of the care his partner received in our Rainbow Room, a touching reminder of the impact our volunteers and teams make.
🎉 We hosted a special garden party at West Berkshire Community Hospital to celebrate and thank our amazing volunteers for all they do.

And these are just a few highlights, so much more has happened this year, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything our do. 💚

With the Christmas bank holiday just around the corner, now is a great time to plan ahead so you’re prepared if you or a loved one becomes unwell over the festive break.

✅ Check your repeat prescriptions early, make sure you have enough medication to last through the bank holiday.

🦷 NHS dental services may have reduced hours. If you need urgent dental advice, call 111.

💊 Pharmacies opening hours may vary, you can check holiday pharmacy times on the NHS website.

🏥 Some GP practices will have limited opening times. Look up your surgery’s schedule in advance.

🚑 Call 999 in an emergency or visit 111 online for urgent care guidance: 111.nhs.uk.

Day 19 – ✨🎄

Our Diabetes Team has shared some simple ways to enjoy Christmas while managing your .

It’s normal for blood sugars to run a little higher over Christmas, extra food, less routine and more downtime can all play a part. A few high readings won’t harm your long-term health, but try not to let levels stay elevated for too long.
If you use a CGM or blood glucose meter, consider checking more often.

🥦Fill your plate with veggies first (watch for sugary glazes).
🥦Keep an eye on hidden sugars in condiments.
🥦Serve your own portions to help balance carbs, protein and healthy fats.
🥦Choose lighter dessert options or stick to one portion.
🥦Avoid alcohol on an empty stomach, especially if you take insulin.
🥦Limit processed meats and watch your salt intake.
🥦Try steaming veg to keep nutrients and reduce calories.

🚶Relaxing over Christmas is part of the enjoyment, but keeping active is important too. Going for a brisk walk each day can help lower your blood sugar and blood pressure.

A little reminder to make sure you’ve got enough medication to last while GP surgeries are closed and stock up on ketone testing strips if you use them.

Day 18 – 🎄✨

The festive season can be exciting, but for children with bowel or bladder problems, the change in routine, travel, and big family gatherings can make things harder. This can lead to stress, embarrassment, or feeling left out.

Here are a few simple ways to help children feel more comfortable and confident from our Paediatric Bladder and Bowel team:

✨ Plan ahead - Bring supplies, plan toilet breaks, and choose rooms near bathrooms when staying away.
🥗 Balance festive foods: Keep fibre and fluids in the mix to support regular routines.
💬 Open conversations: A little understanding from family can ease embarrassment.
⏰ Keep some routine: Regular toilet breaks can help children feel in control.
🪪 Boost confidence: Tools like ‘Just Can’t Wait Cards’ can make accessing toilets easier when out and about.
💛 Offer reassurance: Remind children they’re not alone and that Christmas is about joy, not worry.

For more guidance and support, visit ERIC, the children’s bowel and bladder charity.

Resident Doctors’ strike 17 - 22 December 👇

Please come to your appointments unless we contact you to say otherwise.
We're working hard to make sure we can continue to provide services.

If you need medical help but it's not a life-threatening emergency and you’re unsure where to get support, use NHS 111 first, either online or by phone. Only call 999 in a life-threatening emergency.

GP practices will be open so please continue to attend your GP and dental appointments, unless you are contacted and told otherwise.

The pharmacy first service means patients can now visit without a GP appointment for seven common conditions: shingles, sore throat - 5 years and over, infected insect bites, earaches in children 1 to 17 years, sinusitis - 12 years and over.

Thank you for your patience during this time.
