Did you know we offer a whole section of our website dedicated to symptom control? Designed for patients, carers and healthcare professionals, our Information Hub is packed with helpful information to support in managing common symptoms associated with a palliative illness, such as breathlessness, anxiety and fatigue.

Most recently, Dorothy House and TePe have created a range of videos focusing on mouth care. These have been designed to support carers and healthcare professionals in looking after a patient’s oral health, including:

Self-care for patients at home
Assessing the mouth
Providing mouth care to an unconscious patient
Taste for pleasure
Denture care

All these videos (along with our other resources) are free to access via our website: https://okt.to/JxH0m5

As Dying Matters Awareness Week begins, we’re reflecting on the importance of open, honest conversations about death, dying and end of life care.

In March, Dorothy House featured in BBC Panorama's "Assisted Dying – What next?", with patients, families and staff sharing their experiences. While the programme explored the assisted dying debate, it also highlighted the vital role of hospices and the urgent need for fair, sustainable funding, regardless of what happens with the law.

As part of our vision of a society where death is part of life, we granted access to help share compassionate, real stories and to support informed discussion.

Following the recent fall of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of life) bill, Hospice UK CEO, Toby Porter, highlighted the importance of keeping the conversation going on the importance of hospices and the care they provide: “This should mark the start rather than the end of a long and important conversation about choice and dignity at the end of life in England and Wales. High quality palliative and end of life care is essential to making a good death a reality. The focus now must be on making sure it is available to everyone who needs it.”

This week, alongside Hospice UK's Fair Funding for Hospices campaign, we’re calling for openness, understanding and action to ensure high‑quality end of life care is available to everyone, now and in the future.

A big thank you to the Department of Chemisty at the University of Bath for raising a fantastic ÂŁ572 at their annual Great Chemistry Bake Off! The event took place on 25 March and had a huge selection of creative chemistry-themed bakes, and our lovely volunteer Carol Bowery, provided a short talk on the work of the Hospice and helped to hand out prizes.

Well done to everyone involved and thank you for your support!

Across our communities, women so often step forward to care, whether it’s mothers, daughters, partners, friends, carers or professionals. When someone is dying, it is frequently a woman carrying the responsibility with quiet strength.

On Saturday 4 July, we’re coming together for the Women’s Walk: United in Care - a powerful evening walk through the heart of Bath, walking in solidarity for women and for every family who needs us.

By taking part, you’ll help us be there earlier for patients, support carers through the most exhausting moments, and ensure no one faces death or bereavement alone.

Choose either a 5km accessible route or a 12km challenge and be part of an incredible, uplifting event this summer.

This year, Dorothy House proudly celebrates its 50th birthday — a milestone marking half a century of compassionate care, innovation, and community partnership.

We were delighted to receive a letter of congratulations and thanks from Toby Porter, CEO of Hospice UK. Toby has campaigned tirelessly for long-term hospice funding, and we are grateful for Hospice UK’s efforts to help secure the future of hospices in the UK. In his heartfelt letter, Toby recalls the care that his father, Michael Porter, recieved from Dorothy House in 1985 when he was referred to the Hospice for symptom control. Doctors and nurses were able to get Michael's pain under control, allowing him to return home a few days later, where he died peacefully on 4 May 1985.

We are hugely grateful to Toby for sharing his story with us as we celebrate our 50th anniversary, and you can read his full letter over on the news section of our website: https://okt.to/X9crjU

Free tickets are still available for this evening’s service of thanksgiving at Bath Abbey, starting at 7pm (doors open 6:30pm). Together, we’ll remember the more than 75,000 lives and deaths supported over the last five decades, celebrate the people who made this care possible, and reflect on the vital role of compassion and spiritual care in our community. We hope to see you there.

When Cara was first told her cancer was stage four, life narrowed to a single, stark fact: she was going to die. Palliative chemotherapy began, and with it came the physical toll and the emotional work of preparing herself and her family for the end. Then, unexpectedly, a scan showed no active disease. Returning to “normal” proved anything but. Cara had already done the difficult work of coming to terms with death once. Months later, as her illness returned, she found herself facing that reality again—this time with a clarity shaped by love, courage and support.

When offered more rounds of palliative chemotherapy, Cara weighed the potential benefit against the cost to her strength and presence with her two daughters. Her decision was guided by quality, not quantity: she wanted to spend her time feeling well, doing what matters most for as long as she can. She set herself life-affirming goals, even cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End to raise money for Dorothy House.

Dorothy House helped transform the fear around those decisions into peace. Crucially, we’re not just here for Cara, but for her girls too. Your monthly gift will ensure that patients like Cara can live life to the fullest, for as long as they can.

Greetings from Peru! 🇵🇪

As they make their way home, we're excited to share these snaps sent over from our Peru trekkers. They had a fantastic start to their adventure, beginning in the Andean village of Huilloc and supporting a local community.

They had been getting stuck into some hands-on work whilst they acclimatising to the altitude, staying with local families and enjoying the hospitality. As you can see, they got to embrace the local culture with the opportunity to dress up in traditional clothing and helping to harvest potatoes with the villagers!

We're looking forward to seeing more snaps from them once they arrive home and recover from their trek, so watch this space!

Has this given you a little taste for adventure? Head over to our website where you can find out more about our 2027 trek to the Sahara: https://okt.to/oeG7Ii
