The annual – 18 July to 17 August 2025 – is an opportunity for us to celebrate our many South Asian cultures, histories, and communities here at the Trust.

This year’s theme is Roots to Routes – exploring the unique stories that help shape who we are today.

Gurdeep Chaggar is our Substance Misuse Practitioner, working on Ward 16 with patients who have drugs and alcohol issues.

Here she celebrates her culture and tells us about her family’s links with the NHS.

In the later stages of dementia, the person living with the condition is likely to have problems with communication, and there may come a time when they can hardly communicate at all.

For those caring for someone living with dementia who is receiving end of life care, communicating with and supporting someone can be distressing and difficult, particularly for those who have never experienced that situation before.

Here are a few tips that can help you to communicate with someone living with dementia receiving end of life care:

Don’t rely solely on using words. If a person doesn’t understand the words you’re using to communicate, think about using your body language.

Stay close. Remain close to the person you’re trying to communicate with and maintain eye contact if possible.

Look for signs that the person may be in discomfort or pain. A person with advanced dementia who is receiving end of life care might not always be able to let someone know they are experiencing pain.

Take your time. When communicating, try to speak slowly and clearly. Keep your sentences short and simple.

Talk about things of interest to the person. Think about what you’re going to talk about before visiting the person. It might be useful to have a particular topic ready, perhaps something that the person with dementia has always loved, such as their favourite football team or film but remember to stick to one topic at a time.

The Rainbow Badge initiative is really great for allowing people to see that there are allies around or community members that can understand what problems they might be facing and know how to help them or just be a welcoming, friendly face.
