On Friday 17th October, I had my last day work at Park Aspire. This was the longest period of employment I have had in one setting.
13 years ago I started in the October term, 2012 and now I have ended in the October term, 2025 ✨

All the pupils and staff truly made my last day memorable. The cards, flowers, gifts and messages were truly overwhelming. I have never felt so loved from so many staff and children ✨

I have never had to hand in my notice to leave a job that I love so much, in the school that I was so proud to be part of as their Play & Creative Arts Therapist. Working closely with the amazing pupils in various ways, to being part of a brilliant school team, whilst at the same time being able to work with very special friends ✨

The pupils whom I have worked with from day 1, have places in my heart and will always remain with me in my memories. I have always felt so privileged to work with them and their families, to be part of their journey and story during their most challenging and hardest times at school. They have shaped me into becoming the Play Therapist that I always wanted to be, growing as a person, both professionally and personally ✨

The skills and knowledge that I have gained and developed, I can now take with me for my next chapter on the Isle of Wight 💛

Toolkit Tuesday 💛

Today I want to share with you the ‘Celebration session’🥳

Over the last 4 weeks at work, my clients have been counting down to end their play therapy. They will be experiencing their own celebration session next week ✨

The session prior to the celebration session is the last one for the client’s therapeutic process.
Also in this session, the client chooses their favourite drink, food and game which they will then have in their celebration session.

When the celebration session begins, the client looks through their therapeutic process box, choosing to keep or discard any items that they have created over their play therapy journey.
Once this is completed, we then wrap the box up in brown paper and the client writes their name on it.
Their box is then kept in the school office until the end of the day where the client can then safely take it home with them.

I always buy a gift for the client and write in a card, reflecting just how far they have come.
Their gift links in with a strong theme that the client has shown in the their session’s.

Once the client has enjoyed their food and drink, we then play their favourite game together.

After this, their celebration session is complete and their play therapy journey has come to an end ✨

Photos are from previous clients several years ago 📸

Today I want to share with you ‘Unplanned’ endings 🧩

Currently at work my clients are going through their ‘planned’ ending process with me ✨
But over the years, there have been many clients who haven’t experienced this for various reasons;
Moving out of area without notice ✨
Stopped attending school
Quick transition to new school ✨
Choosing not to come to their end session ✨

With all of the above, we have to consider many things being the therapist and for our clients who experience unplanned endings ✨

For the therapist, how does it make us feel?
How do we explore those feelings…
In our process diary to place those feelings ✨
With our supervisor to help us make sense of this experience ✨
With our work colleagues to share in a confidential
space ✨
In our own individual way to help us process this unplanned ending ✨

For the clients, how does it make them feel?
How do they explore those feelings…
Where can they place those feelings?
Who can help them make sense of this experience?
Will they have friends who they can talk to about it?
Depending how far into their therapy they are, will they have the tools to process what has happened?

For many of our pupils it’s not just their play therapy that abruptly ended, it’s also about what they left behind…

Peers
Transport staff

Routines

Safety
Being ‘looked after’
Being ‘kept in mind’
Sometimes their ‘everything’

When I first experienced an unplanned ending I chose to put something in place that I have done ever since, sending a postcard to say ‘Hello’
I link the postcard picture to a theme that the client explored in their sessions with me.

Today I want to share with you ‘Counting Down’ for Planned Endings ✨

It seems fitting to talk about planned endings as I work in a school where my current clients are going through their ending process with me ✨

Back in May, my clients were made aware that when they returned to school after the June half-term we would be starting to countdown to ending their play therapy in July, which would be just before our school summer holidays✨
When each client returned for their first session after this break, I reminded them that in their following session we would begin counting down to end their therapy✨

Most of my client’s start their countdowns with 4 sessions left;
4…Process session
3…Process session
2…Last session for process
1…Celebration session

The client either chooses to keep their picture in their therapeutic process box or to discard it away✨

I make sure that their countdown pictures link in with;
Their personality
Their therapy themes
Their favourite colour
Their favourite things

This shows the client that they have been ‘noticed’ and ‘heard’ by me, their therapist, throughout their therapy intervention✨

But for many of our pupils at school, it’s not just their play therapy that is coming to an end, they are also experiencing many endings as they move onto their new provision, they will be ending with….
School staff
Peers
School
Transport staff
Routines
Connection
Safety
Being ‘looked after’
Being ‘kept in mind’
Sometimes their ‘everything’
The list can go on…

As we come to an end in our Academic Year at school, over the next few weeks on Toolkit Tuesday, I will explore Unplanned Endings and the Celebration Sessions 💛

The countdown pictures in the photos are from previous clients from several years ago 📸
