Today is National Siblings Day… and for some children, that word “sibling” carries a silence that no one else can see.
When a young child loses their brother or sister, they don’t just lose a play mate.
They lose a piece of their world before they’ve even had the chance to understand it.
Their childhood changes in ways that aren’t always obvious.
The laughter is still there… but it’s different.
The games still happen… but someone is always missing.
There’s a space that grows with them - one that no one else can fill.
Bereaved siblings grow up alongside grief.
They may not always have the words for it, but it shows in so many ways - in their emotions, their behaviour, their need for reassurance, their fear of losing more people they love.
It can shape how they see the world:
less certain, less safe, less predictable.
It can shape their relationships too.
Sometimes they hold on tighter.
Sometimes they struggle to let people in at all.
They might carry guilt.
They might carry confusion.
They might carry questions that don’t have answers.
And as they grow older, the loss grows with them.
They begin to understand more… and feel it differently at every stage of life.
They grieve the memories they didn’t get to make.
The conversations they’ll never have.
The version of their future that should have included their sibling.
But they also carry something else…
A love that never leaves.
A bond that doesn’t end.
A sibling who is still part of their story — just in a different way.
So today, on National Siblings Day, remember the children who are growing up missing a piece of their heart.
Their story didn’t end… but it changed forever 💔
