Florida Secures Medical Freedom: Leading the Nation in Ending All Vaccine Mandates

In a historic move, Florida is the first state in the nation to eliminate all vaccine mandates for children and adults. As the January 2026 legislative session begins, Governor Ron DeSantis and Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo are finalizing the repeal of long-standing statutes to prioritize parental rights and personal liberty over government overreach.

While the Florida Department of Health has already moved to end non-statutory mandates—such as those for Hepatitis B and chickenpox—lawmakers are now voting to strike remaining requirements for polio, measles, and others from state law. Simultaneously, Florida is "still running" its public health infrastructure by ensuring vaccines remain available for voluntary use while introducing the 2026 Health Care Medical Freedom Act (HB 917) to prohibit discrimination based on vaccination status and mandate informed consent for all parents. Florida continues to show the nation that individual rights must always come first.

The Trump administration has taken an unprecedented step by reducing the number of vaccines recommended for every child in the United States, altering the long-standing federal immunization schedule. The change, announced Monday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, cuts the childhood schedule from about 72 recommended vaccine doses across childhood to 11 core vaccines universally recommended for all children. Several immunizations—such as influenza, hepatitis, and rotavirus—were removed from universal recommendation, though families will still be able to access them without losing insurance coverage. The decision follows a December request by Donald Trump to review how U.S. vaccine guidance compares with that of 20 peer nations, a review that concluded the United States was an “outlier” in both the number of vaccines and doses recommended for children. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the revision is intended to rebuild public trust by focusing only on the most essential immunizations, but medical experts strongly criticized the move, warning that changing recommendations without a transparent public review could reduce vaccination rates and increase preventable disease. Michael Osterholm of the University of Minnesota said abandoning guidance for key vaccines could lead to more hospitalizations and preventable deaths among American children.
