This week, we continue to explore the theme of new beginnings, bringing awareness to where we are now, so we can reflect and use that feedback to set intentional rhythms and routines that work for us. The seasons move in patterns and rhythms, as do the systems in the body, as does our breath; rhythm and repetition calms the nervous system and supports regulation. Familiarity is comforting, which is why we can be pulled into auto-pilot and habits and why checking in with these patterns to ensure they are nurturing is important for ongoing wellbeing.
Slow, patterned repetitive movement has been shown to help calm stress. Just a few minutes a day of tuning into these rhythms can have a profound effect on how we feel and help us to tune into our steady, calm centre.
One of the most powerful aspects of yoga is the connection to the breath and the effect that the breath can have on the body and the nervous system, which can directly affect how we feel. Paradoxically, the connection with the breath can actually be the hardest thing to establish and maintain, especially as we move through postures! But with time and practise, the connection becomes more familiar and easeful.
So in tonight's flows we will embrace rhythm, routine and build familiarity with a ladder sequence where we repeat and build up the sequence each round, meaning that the sequence will become predictable and therefore we can focus more of our awareness on the breath. Once we can move in synchronicity with the breath, it can bring a sense of calm, cultivating that same quality of breath that we often experience in childs pose, even when the body is being challenged! We can then take this breath-awareness and find that same sense of calm off the mat...even in times of mental challenge, we can settle back into the familiar pattern and rhythm of the breath and connect to our steady, calm centre ✨️💚
